College Basketball Picks: Kansas Jayhawks NCAA Futures Odds
by George Monroy - 9/9/2013
The Kansas Jayhawks may have hit the recruiting jackpot when Andrew Wiggins—the next once-in-a-generation player—decided to attend the school. The Jayhawks will undoubtedly be a good team next season, but how good remains to be seen. Wiggins is supposed to be the next huge NBA star (think Michael Jordan or LeBron James). The freshmen will more than likely be a one-and-done player before he heads to the pros, so now is the time for the Jayhawks to capitalize on all their talent and win a second national title since 2008.
Let’s take a closer look at the Kansas Jayhawks and go over a few NCAA futures odds associated with the team for the upcoming NCAA men’s basketball season. All odds come from Bovada.
The roster
The Jayhawks will be starting three players that are 6-foot-8 or taller and may be one of the bigger teams in the nation. Joel Embiid will start at center, Perry Ellis and Andrew Wiggins will start at the forward spots, and Wayne Selden and Naadir Tharpe will play the guard positions. Kansas’ starting five is full of talent but lacks a bit in experience. The team lost all five of last season’s starters and will play a mix of incoming freshmen and role players from last year. Outside of Wiggins, much of Kansas’ success will rely on how well the returning guards can handle the ball and distribute to the rest of the team. Last season Tharpe showed signs of being an excellent ball handler and passer, and if he can continue his growth and maturation as a basketball player the Jayhawks will be in good hands.
Championship odds: + 800
The Jayhawks have the second-best title odds in the nation and trail only Kentucky at +500. Kansas will play a very tough nonconference schedule and will face teams like Duke, Georgetown, New Mexico, Florida and a few other major conference teams. And with a new and inexperienced starting five, the team will likely go through a few growing pains throughout the season. By the time the tournament rolls around in March, the Jayhawks will be a title contender. However, during the beginning of the season the team’s championships odds might move around a bit after a loss or two. So if a bettor can get odds in the +1000 range, he would be wagering on an excellent value play.
Andrew Wiggins props:
Will Wiggins be selected number-one overall in the 2014 NBA Draft?
“Yes”: -300
“No”: +200
Andrew Wiggins is supposed to be the next great NBA player and a can’t-miss prospect along the lines of LeBron James and Tim Duncan. Even if Wiggins does not have a spectacular year, most NBA teams will probably still take him as the No. 1 pick in the draft based on potential alone. This wager is a yes, but it is not full of value, mainly because -300 of a lot of money to wager when outside factors such and injury could play a part. Andrew is the odds-on favorite to be the No. 1 pick. However, it is not a must-bet situation.
How many points will Wiggins average this season?
“Over” 18 points: -120
“Under” 18 points: -120
Wiggins will be the star of the team and play a solid amount of minutes. However, expecting him to score more than 18 points a game is a stretch. The young prospect has all the potential in the world to be a star and excellent college and NBA player. However, it is his first year and it’s not necessarily a given that he will dominate the NCAA. Last season 29 players averaged 18 or more points per game, so Wiggins hitting that number is not beyond his reach. All I am saying is that there is learning curve, and Wiggins can still be the next LeBron James without dominating in college. I like the under.
