2020 Spurs Championship Odds: Popovich Will have To Work His Magic
by Trevor Whenham - 10/15/2019
In the spring of 1997, I graduated from college. It seems like that was a lifetime ago. This isn't just nostalgia, though. That time is relevant here, too. As I was walking across the stage and tossing my hat, the San Antonio Spurs were struggling to a 20-win season. David Robinson was nearing the end of his prime, and things seemed a little desperate.
2019 Rockets Hope Reunifying of Stars Propels Them to Finals
by Trevor Whenham - 10/11/2019
The Houston Rockets have been so close for a while now, but they have really struggled to get over the top. And last year was the breaking point - they saw the writing on the wall. The Golden State Warriors were very vulnerable last year in the Western Conference Finals - as the Toronto Raptors showed a series later.
2019 Pelicans Hope New Player Mix Speeds Rebuilding Phase
by Trevor Whenham - 10/11/2019
It was as strange an offseason as you can get in New Orleans. The team was forced to trade away their franchise player, bullied into it by the guy and his representatives. Normally that kind of thing just breeds anger and resentment with the team left behind. Yet it would be tough to find anyone who is anything but bubbling with optimism around this Pelicans squad.
2019 Mavericks Banking on Euro Core for Success
by Trevor Whenham - 10/11/2019
The Dallas Mavericks knew they had drafted a player when they picked Luka Doncic third overall in the 2018 draft. But they couldn't have known just how easily he would take to the NBA game, how good he would look, or how high his ceiling is. He was just the fifth player ever to average 20-5-5 as a rookie, joining an incredible group that includes Oscar Robertson, Michael Jordan, LeBron James and, bizarrely, Tyreke Evans.
2019 Thunder Facing Lots of Changes on the Court
by Trevor Whenham - 10/10/2019
Whenever teams elevate themselves in a conference and make themselves into real playoff contenders - as the Lakers certainly have, and the Mavericks and Kings hope they have as well - there has to be teams that make way for them and miss the postseason. And, selflessly, it seems as if the Thunder are very much determined to be one of those teams. After winning 49 games last year, and having been among the contenders for several years, circumstances conspired to see this team take a massive step backwards.
2019 Timberwolves Likely Facing Another Disappointing Season
by Trevor Whenham - 10/10/2019
It wasn't that long ago that it felt like the Timberwolves were on the verge of big things. They had impressive young talent with high ceilings, and it seemed like it was only a matter of time. But since then they have proven that things really don't always work out like they are intended to. They have made the playoffs just once since 2004 - two years ago when they were rolled over by the Rockets in the first round.
2019 Denver Nuggets Staying on Upward Trajectory
by Trevor Whenham - 10/10/2019
The Nuggets are on a serious upward trajectory. They had missed the playoffs for five years in a row heading into last season. And they had really bottomed out, winning just 30 games in 2015. But after winning 46 games in 2018, they really went on a run last year, climbing all the way to 54 wins. And it certainly isn't a mystery to figure out how they pulled that off. Nikola Jokic is a true superstar, and he just keeps getting better - and he's only 25.
2019 Grizzlies Looking at a Big Transition Season
by Trevor Whenham - 10/10/2019
It is not going to be a particularly inspiring season in Memphis, and the Grizzlies have all but locked up the fifth spot in the Southwest Division - and one of the bottom two, or three at best, in the West. A squad built for seemingly ever around a core of Marc Gasol and Mike Conley suddenly has neither after Gasol was traded last season and Conley this summer.
2019 Jazz May Have Best Roster in Franchise History
by Trevor Whenham - 10/7/2019
The Utah Jazz have really been one of the more impressive stories in the NBA the last couple of years. Fresh off a 51-win season in 2017, they lost their best player, Gordon Hayward, in free agency. The narrative at that time was that they were in for a rough rebuild, and that being in an unattractive market for players would only make things tougher. But in the two seasons since, they have won 48 and 50 games. And after a very strong summer, they are poised to be better now than they ever were with Hayward.
2019 Lakers Hope New Roster Mix Produces Championship Results
by Trevor Whenham - 10/4/2019
I have been skeptical about this Lakers experiment for as long as it has been underway, but it wasn't until just today when I read a story about training camp that I realized exactly why it was. As the story went, the team was playing a scrimmage with the ones against the twos. And there was so much that stood out about it. The ones lost. That's a rough start.
2019 Clippers Favored to Win First-Ever NBA Championship
by Trevor Whenham - 10/4/2019
I have a bone to pick with the Los Angeles Clippers. I'm a Canadian, so it's no mystery what it is - they stole Kawhi Leonard from his rightful home north of the border. He the North - or at least he should be. But, alas, the Clippers landed that massive prize and so much more, and in the process went from a plucky upstart that surprised some by making the playoffs last year to the clear and obvious favorites to win it all this year. It's a dramatic turnaround - a process that went so perfectly, and so quickly, that it makes Philadelphia's look truly glacial.
2019 Blazers Look to Take One Step Forward with Retooled Roster
by Trevor Whenham - 10/4/2019
The Portland Trail Blazers are coming off a heck of a season in many ways. They won 53 games. They made it to the Western Conference Finals by beating Oklahoma City and upsetting Denver. They enjoyed that playoff success despite playing without Jusuf Nurkic, who has evolved into one of the truly important players on this team.
Warriors Still Gunning for Finals Despite Klay Injury, Durant Departure
by Trevor Whenham - 10/3/2019
The most popular thing to do this offseason in the NBA is to write off the Golden State Warriors. After losing in the finals last year, and then going through a whole lot of change, so many people seem to be sticking a fork in the team. But despite all of the differences, the team is talking like they are still the same old Warriors. And if any team deserves the benefit of the doubt, it is the Warriors after what they have done the last several years.
2019 Kings Basketball Still Far Away from Division Throne
by Trevor Whenham - 10/3/2019
If circumstances were different, the Sacramento Kings could be a media darling - a loveable underdog that people would be happy to cheer for. After years of incompetence and the loss of a superstar, the Kings had a halfway respectable season last year. They finished ninth in tough Western Conference. It's not quite as impressive as it sounds - they were nine games back of the Clippers in eighth, so it's not like they were knocking on the door of the playoffs.
2019 Phoenix Suns Odds to win NBA Championship with Expert Predictions
by Trevor Whenham - 9/30/2019
Alvin Gentry was fired as Phoenix Suns' head coach in January of 2013. Since then, the team has gone through five head coaches, with four of them winning less than 30 percent of their games. It has been more than a little pathetic. The next man up is Monty Williams, replacing Igor Kokoskov after just one season. Williams is the most proven of the head coaches since Gentry. But he is taking over a mess that isn't much improved from what the last five have had to deal with. Can the story be any different from what we have gotten used to with this team?
2020 NBA Finals Championship Predictions: Can Toronto Repeat?
by Trevor Whenham - 6/14/2019
The Toronto Raptors have won the NBA title, yet again proving the undeniable superiority of Canada. You guys might as well quit fighting it. We're nice up here, so we won't rub it in. Every year as soon the NBA Championship is awarded, we immediately ask ourselves the same question - can they do it again? The short answer in the case of the Raptors is that we have absolutely no way of knowing, and anyone who says they do is lying - to you or to themselves.
