What are NBA Picks Against the Spread?

Most NBA bettors are going to make NBA picks against the spread. This is also known as NBA picks ATS. Sportsbooks give each NBA team a handicap of X amount of points. That means if books think the Lakers are 4 points better than the Celtics they will offer a line of Lakers -4. If a Doc's handicapper has reason to believe the Lakers are much more than 4 points better, his pick against the spread would be to take the Lakers -4. This is how all bets on the spread work unless bookmakers consider both teams to be evenly matched, in which case the line is a pick, AKA pick'em. At Doc's the majority of our NBA selections are against the spread. However, there can be outstanding value on betting NBA totals.

What are NBA Over/Under Picks?

The pace of the game, as well as which team dictates the pace, is a key factor when handicapping basketball games. When pace is an especially strong signal, it may dictate a pick on the over/under. An NBA over/under pick is another way of referring to a prediction on an NBA game point total. NBA total lines are usually well above 200 in today's NBA making them harder for the betting public to find value. For example, the 2004 Detroit Pistons team was very consistently within 5 points of the 90 they averaged. In today's NBA, greater scoring means greater variance. However, professional basketball handicappers can use this to their advantage as the sportsbooks also try to keep track of the higher scoring NBA totals. What are NBA Parlay Picks?

Parlay picks are sucker bets they say! Never bet and NBA parlay they say! Bettors that speak in these absolutes clearly haven't learned how to find value betting basketball. Sure, the payout on parlays at most sportsbooks have gone down to the point where putting two of your picks together for the sake of winning more is not a good investment. But what if your parlay picks could be made on the same game? That is called a correlated NBA parlay. Many sportsbooks offer the ability to make NBA bets against the spread and total in the same game. So if you have a great read on a game and expect one team to quit and fall behind, you may decide to make an NBA parlay prediction. At Doc's our experts will offer a free parlay pick in rare cases. It is not common because we need to find value for our customers on both lines before they move. If our parlay prediction is indeed on the same game, we need to confirm there is value regardless of the fact that you can't line shop the odds on a parlay. Both bets in a parlay must be made at the same sportsbook. If there is a free selection on the total over of -14 and under 200 it was offered knowing that those lines can be found at most Las Vegas sportsbooks and online.

What are NBA Playoff Predictions?

Once the regular season is over the NBA tends to resemble the national football league in many ways. Bettors have much more time to make their NBA playoff picks as teams travel to each other's arenas and rest between series. Making successful NBA playoff predictions is as much about when you bet as it is who you bet on. A series might not start for days. That means an NBA spread may move quite a few points especially as the public bets closer to the action. If we see value in a playoff prediction it will rely heavily on getting the line we are quoting in said NBA pick. In the words of the great Tony George, "We are betting numbers, not teams!" That may not be more relevant than when making picks on the NBA playoff games.

2-Unit Play Take LA Clippers/New York UNDER 218 (7:30 p.m. EST, Wednesday March 26)
The Clippers have been playing championship caliber basketball recently and this is a team no one will want to face in the playoffs if they stay healthy. You can tell the Knicks miss Brunson a lot as their offense isn’t working well and they have been overall inconsistent. They don’t have a performance recently that was extremely impressive and they have been beating the teams they should but losing to solid teams. They lost to the Clippers earlier this month in a low scoring game. The Clippers have won and covered in four of five meetings.

This Knicks team is in back to back and with so many banged up key players wouldn’t doubt if this ends up big blowout. Clippers been playing great as of late and think it continues as this veteran bunch are heating up at right time. Take the LA Clippers to win and cover the spread tonight.

The Nuggets are catching a break in this one with Dame Lillard out indefinitely with blood clots. Denver has not been on their A game of late losing three of four and this one would have been a tough matchup even at home so look for them to snap out of their mini funk. The Bucks certainly aren’t dead yet but this will severely hurt their deep playoff run chances as Dame was playing well this season. This should be a Nugs W with little trouble.

4-Unit Play. Take Brooklyn Nets Money-Line -140 over Toronto Raptors (Wednesday @ 7:40pm est)

What you have here is a Toronto team that finally won a game in their last contest but we love the Nets here to get some revenge. Remember, Toronto won by 17 points last time out, they come off a big win against Washington b/c they were embarrassed badly in the game prior. You get a Nets team that is playing great basketball right now, yes, they haven't been picking up the straight up wins, but they are healthy for the most part, they are running about 10 deep here and Brooklyn has lost 4 in a row here, including a recent loss by 19 to Dallas but only a 4 point loss to Indiana and a 8 point loss to Boston, we like them to bust out here and get their revenge.

4-Unit Play - #503 Los Angeles -1.5-110 over Indiana (Wednesday, March 26, 2025, 7:40pm ET)

Take the Los Angeles Lakers ATS as my top NBA pick for Wednesday night. This pick falls into one of my top NBA systems and I really like Los Angeles a lot in this spot on the road tonight. Los Angeles has taken four of their last five meetings against Indiana including their last game this season on February 8th winning that game by seven points despite being 4.5-point underdogs. Los Angeles also comes into this game hungry after dropping three straight games. Meanwhile Indiana has strung together five straight victories however two of those victories were against Brooklyn. Los Angeles has shot 47.8% as a team overall this season and I do expect them to step up defensively on the road tonight. Play Los Angeles ATS

3-Unit Play: Take 503 Lakers -1.5 over Pacers (7:40 p.m., Wed., March 26)
The Lakers have dropped three in a row and they certainly didn’t waste much energy in a 12-point loss to Orlando on Monday. HC JJ Reddick was beside himself talking about his team’s worn out look in the loss. I expect to see a revitalized effort tonight. One thing the Lakers don’t have is a rim protector but Indiana doesn’t really have the player to take advantage of L.A.’s achilles heel. I’m backing the Lakers. Thanks & GL! Scott Spreitzer.

3-Unit Play: Take 512 Suns +3.5 over Celtics (10:10 p.m., Wed., March 26)
Boston’s Jayson Tatum is doubtful after injuring his ankle in their previous game. The Celtics are virtually locked-in to second in the Eastern Conference and that injury should be a wake-up call that health means more than wins at this point. Phoenix has won four in a row and they’re in a fight for a play-in spot in the West. The Suns’ problems come on the road but at home they’re a decent 23-13 SU. This game obviously means a lot more to Phoenix than Boston and I expect the Suns to come through. I’m taking the points with Phoenix. Thanks & GL! Scott Spreitzer.

4-Unit Play - Take #501 Washington Wizards +3.5 -110 over Philadelphia 76ers (3/26 @ 7:00PM EST) The Philadelphia 76ers are an abomination of a team. Don't get me wrong; the Wizards are awful as well. However, there is something about this Philadelphia team that nauseates me. They shouldn't be laying juice vs. anyone; and I have doubts that they can even win another game for the remainders of the season. I'm sure they'll somehow blow Washington out by 30 now, but this is a bet in principle.

4-Unit Play. Take 'Over' 221 Milwaukee at Denver (9:10 p.m., Wednesday, March 26)
This is a great spot for an 'over' as both teams are without star players. In the NBA you can grab value on a number as players that don't typically get time look to showcase their skills offensively. The issue isn't scoring ability, it's the fact that teams struggle defensively when their top players aren't around. Look for this one to get close to 230 total points.

8 Unit Play Take #503 Los Angeles Lakers -1 over Indiana (7:40pm est):

(-1 is at DraftKings, Caesars and BetOnline)

I think we get a huge effort here from Los Angeles in this one. The Lakers have not looked good of late dropping three straight games and all being double digits defeats. This is an extremely talented team that's finally healthy again and they've shown they tend to turn things up when facing good teams like Indiana as LA has went 13-3 against the spread in their last 16 games versus above .500 teams. On the other side of things Indiana has struggled in these lower lined games especially of late going 1-7 versus the number in games lined between -4 and +4 points.
