Two teams having polar opposite 2014 seasons will be on display at the Staples Center on Wednesday night. On one end you have the Spurs who have inexplicably dominated this season on their way to the top seed in the West and possibly the best record in all of the NBA. Then there is the once proud Lakers whose celebrity fans have forgotten about showtime and now just cheer for 'is the game over so we can go-time'.
The thing that's most surprising about San Antonio's run is that they've done it by and large without the usual faces. Tim Duncan, Tony Parker, and Manu Ginobili are still producing but in heavily reduced minutes while Danny Green, Kawhi Leonard, and Patty Mills have led a balanced attack. The Spurs come into Los Angeles with a 10 game win streak, one of which was a 34 point throttling of the Lakers only a few days ago.
The Lakers are operating with a skeleton crew this season with names like Kobe and Nash being replaced by Wesley Johnson and Jodie Meeks. Pau Gasol has enjoyed nice production lately going for 20+ points in 5 straight games to begin March but it hasn't turned into many wins.
If LA has anything going for them it's the fact that they'll be well rested for Wednesday night's tilt. The Lakers have had 5 days to stew or just forget about that 119-85 loss to the Spurs. The Spurs balanced attack had 6 players score in double figures against the Lakers and none of them were named Parker (7 points), Ginobili (7), or Duncan (9). As expected in a 34 point win the Spurs were able to cover even though the line was -17.5 and the whopping 226 total went under by 22 points.
