The Houston Rockets and the Portland Trailblazers finished their seasons with the same record, but the Rockets were able to grab the fourth seed after beating the Blazers in their season series. Portland comes into the playoffs as one of the hottest teams in the league after winning their last five games.

Both teams come in as two of the better scoring and rebounding squads, with the Rockets ranking second in the NBA in scoring and fourth in rebounding, and the Rockets ranking fourth in scoring and number one in rebounding. Both teams rank in the bottom 10 in team defense, though.

The Trailblazers were able to beat the Rockets in the second game of the season series between these two teams, but the Rockets won the other three. In their final meeting of the regular season in early March, Houston beat Portland 118-113. Both teams scored over 100 points in each of their four games.

All-Star shooting guard James Harden improved again this season and averaged 25.5 points and 6.1 assists per game. Center Dwight Howard had a nice bounce-back year for his new team and averaged 18.3 points, 12.2 rebounds and 1.8 blocks per game.

The Trailblazers were led by star power forward LaMarcus Aldridge, who scored 23.2 points per game and over 11 rebounds. Second-year point guard Damian Lillard made his first All-Star appearance this season and finished with 20.7 points and 5.6 assists per game.
