The 8th seed in the Eastern Conference is a tough one to figure out. For months Atlanta was the last team in with no team except for the Knicks being possibly able to catch them. Soon a New York winning streak coupled by a Hawks catastrophic slide gave the Knicks the last spot. Now, heading into the final week of the season Atlanta has won 3 out 4 while New York has dropped two in a row to give the Hawks a percentage point lead. It's looking like nothing will truly be decided until game 82 of the season.
The Knicks have four games remaining in the 2013/14 regular season and they all come against playoff teams, including two against Toronto. One asset they have going for them before Friday's game is four full days of rest following back-to-back losses to Washington and Miami. The break comes at a great time for Carmelo Anthony, who is resting a sore shoulder. New York is chasing the Hawks, who play Boston and Miilwaukee as part of their last 5 games which means every victory is crucial for the Knicks.
Toronto needs wins as well since they're in a dead heat with Chicago for the #3 seed in the East. Both the Raptors and Bulls will have home court in their first round playoff series but whichever team captures 3rd would most likely play the Pacers in round 2 if both the top seeds advance. The Raptors aren't intent of giving up their spot without a fight, having posted 6 wins in their last 7 games from March 26th to April 5th including wins over Houston and Indiana.
The Knicks and Raptors met twice on consecutive nights on December 27th/28th with Toronto winning both games. The first matchup was a 95-83 Raptor win in the Garden as 3 point favorites. Night two shifted to the Air Canada Centre where Toronto dominated 115-100 with a -6.5 spread.
