Brian Shaw had to wait for the final moments of the game before he got his first NBA victory as a head coach. The Hawks' Al Horford took a last second shot that skimmed over the rim for a miss and the horn sounded, giving the Denver Nuggets a 109-107 win when these two teams last played each other. Surviving a late Atlanta rally, the Nuggets stayed ahead for most of the second and third-quarter. They led by as many as nine points in the first-half and five in the third-quarter but found themselves trailing in the final 7 minutes of the fourth quarter.

The Hawks final push came just a little too late. Denver  took the lead on Ty Lawson's jumper with 1:46 left, and his 3-pointer made it 107-102 with :59 seconds left. The Nuggets' Nate Robinson and Paul Millsap of Atlanta traded free throws, and Lawson hit 1 of 2 of his free-throws from the line before the last play of the game that produced a Nuggets win.

Helping the Nuggets along was Nate Robinson with 15 points, Lawson with 23 points, eight assists and seven boards, and JaVale McGee who put up 14.

For the Hawks, Millsap scored a season-high 29 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, but when he was really needed at the end of the game, he blew a short jumper that would have tied the game with 1.9 seconds left. Horford, who scored 21, also had a last chance to tie the game when he grabbed Millsap's rebound, but his shot also came up short and time expired.
