As has been the case for years now, the San Antonio Spurs relied heavily on future Hall of Famer Tim Duncan to get the 90-85 win over the Dallas Mavericks to take a 1-0 lead in the series. The 37-year-old power forward scored a game-high 27 points on 12-of-20 shooting on a night when the Spurs just couldn't hit their outside shots.

The Spurs played fantastic defense in the first quarter and were able to take a 21-12 lead into the second period. The Mavs found their groove in the second, though, and went into the half with a one-point lead. After a tight third period that saw the teams go into the fourth tied at 75, the Spurs were able to overcome a 10-point deficit to pull off the five-point win.

The Spurs made just three of their 17 three-point attempts in the game, but their defense and the play of Duncan and Tony Parker kept them in the game throughout the night. Parker finished with 21 points and six assists, while small forward Kawhi Leonard added 11 points and 10 rebounds.

Dirk Nowitzki had an off night for the Mavs, scoring just 11 points on 4-of-14 shooting, but he did have eight rebounds and two blocks. Dallas' top scorer was Devin Harris, who came off of the bench to score 19 points in the loss.
