The Brooklyn Nets had a great first half the last time they saw the Cleveland Cavaliers and were able to hold them off in the second half for an 89-82 early January victory. Brooklyn's Paul Pierce was able to pass Allen Iverson and move into 19th place on the all-time scoring list. Pierce had 17 points, five assists and three blocks in his milestone game. The potential Hall of Famer needed just two points in this one to pass Iverson on the scoring list and got those points less than three minutes into the game.

The Nets took advantage of the Cavs missing their star point guard Kyrie Irving by getting out to a healthy lead going into the half. Cleveland fought back, though, and were only down by two going into the final quarter. The Nets stepped up their defense in the fourth quarter and held the Cavs to just 19 percent shooting to pull off the 89-82 win.

Deron Williams added 21 points and six assists for the hosts. The Nets won for the second straight game, which was just their second winning streak of the season at that point.

Dion Waiters came off the bench for the Cavaliers to score 26 points in the contest. Cleveland made 10 of the 22 three-pointers they took in the game, but their overall field goal percentage was just 36.7%.
