Jazz at Clippers Picks and NBA Betting Odds
by Dave Schwab - 2/23/2013
The Utah Jazz will try and extend their current winning streak to four games when they square off against the Los Angeles Clippers this Saturday night at the Staples Center. This Western Conference showdown is set to tip off at 10:30 p.m. (ET), and the game will be available on NBA League Pass.
The Jazz made it three in a row with a 115-101 victory over Golden State this past Tuesday as 3.5-point home favorites. They are now 31-24 straight up on the year and an even 27-27-1 against the spread. The total has gone “over” in three of their last four games.
Los Angeles came off the all-star break completely flat in a 116-90 beat down at hands of San Antonio as a four-point home favorite. The total went over the 200-point line and has now gone over in six of its last nine games. The Clippers are 21-6 SU at home this season and 16-11 ATS.
Jazz at Clippers Betting Storylines
Utah decided to stand pat with its current roster as the NBA Trade Deadline came and went on Thursday afternoon. That means both Paul Millsap and Al Jefferson, who will both become free agents as the end of the season, will continue to lead a crowded frontcourt. This is good news for Jazz fans in the short term considering the duo has led the team in scoring and rebounds all season long.
The Jazz are ranked 11th in the league in scoring with an average of 98.6 points a game while shooting 45.2 percent from the field and 36.5 percent from three-point range. They are pulling down 41.9 rebounds a game and holding opponents to an average of 98.7 points a game. All these numbers paint a picture of a solid all-around team that has the ability to compete with anyone on a given night.
The Clippers’ four-game winning streak heading into the all-star break came to an abrupt end against the Spurs, and they are now 5.5 games behind San Antonio for the top spot in the West. Given the fact that Los Angeles was as healthy as it has been in a quite awhile, there has to be some sense of concern with this team’s position as a legitimate contender to win the conference this season.
Blake Griffin leads the team with 18.5 points and 8.7 rebounds, and Chris Paul is adding 16.4 points and a team-high 9.4 assists. Even with Jamal Crawford coming off the bench to average 16.8 points a game, you have to question if it is enough after getting blown out by 26 points at home. Fortunately, this contest is against a team that does not have nearly as much overall firepower as San Antonio.
Jazz at Clippers Betting Odds and Trends
Los Angeles has been opened by BetOnline as a 9.5-point home favorite for this matchup with the “over/under” set at 196.5
The Jazz are 5-12 ATS in their last 17 games on three or more day’s rest but 5-2 ATS in their last seven games against a team with a winning record. The total has stayed under in seven of their last nine games following a SU win.
The Clippers are 4-1 ATS in their last five games following a double-digit loss at home. They are 1-5 ATS in their last six home games, and the total has gone over in their last five games against a team with a winning record.
Head-to-head in this series, the home team is 21-7 ATS in the last 28 meetings, and the total has gone over in the last five games. Overall, Utah is 19-7 ATS in the last 26 meetings. It has lost all three previous meetings this season SU, but it did cover as a home underdog in the first two.
Jazz at Clippers Picks and Betting Predictions
The Clippers have had Utah’s number over the past two seasons with five straight wins. Add the fact that they will be under the gun to put forth a much better effort for home-town crowd after Thursday night’s debacle, and the pick in this game is squarely on Los Angeles to win and cover the 9.5 points.
