What are NBA Picks Against the Spread?

Most NBA bettors are going to make NBA picks against the spread. This is also known as NBA picks ATS. Sportsbooks give each NBA team a handicap of X amount of points. That means if books think the Lakers are 4 points better than the Celtics they will offer a line of Lakers -4. If a Doc's handicapper has reason to believe the Lakers are much more than 4 points better, his pick against the spread would be to take the Lakers -4. This is how all bets on the spread work unless bookmakers consider both teams to be evenly matched, in which case the line is a pick, AKA pick'em. At Doc's the majority of our NBA selections are against the spread. However, there can be outstanding value on betting NBA totals.

What are NBA Over/Under Picks?

The pace of the game, as well as which team dictates the pace, is a key factor when handicapping basketball games. When pace is an especially strong signal, it may dictate a pick on the over/under. An NBA over/under pick is another way of referring to a prediction on an NBA game point total. NBA total lines are usually well above 200 in today's NBA making them harder for the betting public to find value. For example, the 2004 Detroit Pistons team was very consistently within 5 points of the 90 they averaged. In today's NBA, greater scoring means greater variance. However, professional basketball handicappers can use this to their advantage as the sportsbooks also try to keep track of the higher scoring NBA totals. What are NBA Parlay Picks?

Parlay picks are sucker bets they say! Never bet and NBA parlay they say! Bettors that speak in these absolutes clearly haven't learned how to find value betting basketball. Sure, the payout on parlays at most sportsbooks have gone down to the point where putting two of your picks together for the sake of winning more is not a good investment. But what if your parlay picks could be made on the same game? That is called a correlated NBA parlay. Many sportsbooks offer the ability to make NBA bets against the spread and total in the same game. So if you have a great read on a game and expect one team to quit and fall behind, you may decide to make an NBA parlay prediction. At Doc's our experts will offer a free parlay pick in rare cases. It is not common because we need to find value for our customers on both lines before they move. If our parlay prediction is indeed on the same game, we need to confirm there is value regardless of the fact that you can't line shop the odds on a parlay. Both bets in a parlay must be made at the same sportsbook. If there is a free selection on the total over of -14 and under 200 it was offered knowing that those lines can be found at most Las Vegas sportsbooks and online.

What are NBA Playoff Predictions?

Once the regular season is over the NBA tends to resemble the national football league in many ways. Bettors have much more time to make their NBA playoff picks as teams travel to each other's arenas and rest between series. Making successful NBA playoff predictions is as much about when you bet as it is who you bet on. A series might not start for days. That means an NBA spread may move quite a few points especially as the public bets closer to the action. If we see value in a playoff prediction it will rely heavily on getting the line we are quoting in said NBA pick. In the words of the great Tony George, "We are betting numbers, not teams!" That may not be more relevant than when making picks on the NBA playoff games.

7-Unit Play Take Boston -5 over Cleveland (7 p.m. EST, Tuesday November 19)
Awesome start for Cleveland. You can’t really take anything away from them. But they haven’t played the toughest schedule. And Boston is still the better team. We feel like the sportsbooks are begging the public to load up on Cleveland here with this line. Don’t fall for the trap! Boston has also been incredible and they are 11-3 on the season and have played a road heavy schedule. That is impressive considering many champion teams take awhile to get into the groove of the season with a smaller offseason than most clubs. This will be a playoff type atmosphere and no doubt a game the Celtics will want to win, so we think they will bring their A Game here, and there aren’t many teams that can beat Boston when playing their best.

7-Unit Play. Take #502 Boston (-5) over Cleveland (7 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 19)
4-Unit Play. Take ‘Under’ 236.0 Cleveland at Boston (7 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 19)

Cleveland has to lose sometime. Might as well be tonight against the defending champions. Boston is favored over a 15-0 team for a reason. And this one has the same hallmark of Buffalo’s win over Kansas City in the NFL on Sunday (again: undefeated team as an underdog on the road). I see a similar result. The Celtics handled the Cavaliers last year in the playoffs, winning the series in five games. Boston’s wins in that series were blowouts by 25, 13, 7 and 15 points. This one won’t be a blowout, but I do think the Celtics continue their success in this series (7-3 SU in L10 meetings).

1-Unit Play. Take 'Over' 220.5 Charlotte at Brooklyn (7 p.m., Tuesday, November 19)

The Nets have shown signs of life all season and they play their tails off each night. This team was supposed to be one of the worst in the NBA, but they are no doormat. The Hornets are in the same boat with nobody thinking they are any good and they are proving them wrong. With all that being said these two teams are not great record wise, and they struggle to get stops so that looks like an over all day.

4-Unit Play. #509. Take OKC -9.5 over San Antonio Spurs (Tuesday @ 9:40pm est)

We roll with OKC here as don't forget, we have a 7*Nhl selection today and we are 14-4 with 7* selections. Nice 4* win on the Hawks +3.5 outright over the Kings against former teammate Kevin Huerter, let's see ewhat we can do today. Per this game, we like OKC to come in angry after they lost at home, to a Mavs team, who didn't even have Doncic in that game. The Mavs were outscored in the first and second quarter and did not defend worth a lick while giving up over 120 points to the Mavs at home. They will be furious today as they hit the road to face San Antonio who likely won't have Wemby playing and even if he did play, it would not matter, we still would ride OKC. OKC beat New Orleans by 18, Phoenix by 16 and the Magic by 16, it makes a lot of sense to back OKC here for a solid win.

Take Oklahoma City ATS as my top NBA pick for Tuesday night. This pick falls into one of my top NBA systems and I really like Oklahoma City in the spot as they are hands down the superior team. I look for Oklahoma City to dominate the boards in this game and I believe they will shoot a very high percentage against San Antonio. Oklahoma City has averaged 115.4 points per game this season shooting 46.2% as a team. Oklahoma City has also held opponents to shooting just 41.9% against them this season which ranks first defensively in the NBA. Play Oklahoma City ATS

6-Unit Play - Take #507 New Orleans Pelicans/Dallas Mavericks o222 -110 (11/19 @ 8:30PM EST) This number is lower than it should be based on each teams struggle going over the posted total. However, this is a Mavs team that rank 5th in adjusted offensive rating, and should be able to feast on one of the most depleted teams in the league that rank in the bottom 4 in adjusted defensive rating. The main concern will be the Pels ability to put up enough points, but we have some hidden data that backs up our premise. Unfortunately we don't want to share that data here as it's something that we expect to give us a solid edge moving forward. Let's ride.

4-Unit Play. Take #509 Oklahoma City (-9.5) over San Antonio (9:40 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 19)
The Thunder looked bad the other night against the Mavs as they lost to Dallas without Luka Doncic. OKC is one of the best in the league and when they beat teams they beat them bad. The Thunder are going to bounce back in a big way tonight and cover this line quite easily. In the 'In Season Tournament' point differential is key, so teams that are winning late don't let up. OKC is going to run away from the Spurs in this matchup and win this game by closer to 20 points than 10. Lay the points here as the road team covers this big number.

3-Unit Play. Take #502 Boston (-5) over Cleveland (7 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 19)
This line is where it is for a reason. The Cavs are undefeated and yet they are getting five points from who I believe are still the best team in the NBA. Lay the points.

4 Unit Play - Take #510 San Antonio (+9.5) Over Oklahoma City Thunder. (9:30p.m, Tuesday, November 19th)
San Antonio comes into this game 6-8 on the season, 5-5 in their last 10 games, and coming off a 110-93 loss to Dallas on Saturday. OKC is now 11-3 on the season, 7-3 in their last 10 and coming off a 2-point loss to Dallas on Sunday. San Antonio currently holds a home record of 5-3 on the season, while OKC is 4-1 on the road. San Antonio is not the same Spurs team we watched last season. They are presently ranked 11th in defensive ratings, 10th in rebounds, 10th in assists, and 11th from the arc. We are aware OKC is the better club here on a metric standpoint, but we are talking about a 9.5-point differential here. San Antonio is presently 3-0 ATS with a rest advantage, 5-2 ATS after a loss, and dating back to last season, they went 29-22 ATS when playing conference matchups. OKC was just 14-14 ATS as a road favorite, 23-22-1 ATS on the road, and 14-13-1 ATS after a loss. The herd is all looking at this game, anticipating a massive bounceback game from OKC, as they are one of the most talented clubs in the NBA. Tonight, I believe San Antonio holds their ground at home and covers the 9.5-point spread.
