What are NBA Picks Against the Spread?

Most NBA bettors are going to make NBA picks against the spread. This is also known as NBA picks ATS. Sportsbooks give each NBA team a handicap of X amount of points. That means if books think the Lakers are 4 points better than the Celtics they will offer a line of Lakers -4. If a Doc's handicapper has reason to believe the Lakers are much more than 4 points better, his pick against the spread would be to take the Lakers -4. This is how all bets on the spread work unless bookmakers consider both teams to be evenly matched, in which case the line is a pick, AKA pick'em. At Doc's the majority of our NBA selections are against the spread. However, there can be outstanding value on betting NBA totals.

What are NBA Over/Under Picks?

The pace of the game, as well as which team dictates the pace, is a key factor when handicapping basketball games. When pace is an especially strong signal, it may dictate a pick on the over/under. An NBA over/under pick is another way of referring to a prediction on an NBA game point total. NBA total lines are usually well above 200 in today's NBA making them harder for the betting public to find value. For example, the 2004 Detroit Pistons team was very consistently within 5 points of the 90 they averaged. In today's NBA, greater scoring means greater variance. However, professional basketball handicappers can use this to their advantage as the sportsbooks also try to keep track of the higher scoring NBA totals. What are NBA Parlay Picks?

Parlay picks are sucker bets they say! Never bet and NBA parlay they say! Bettors that speak in these absolutes clearly haven't learned how to find value betting basketball. Sure, the payout on parlays at most sportsbooks have gone down to the point where putting two of your picks together for the sake of winning more is not a good investment. But what if your parlay picks could be made on the same game? That is called a correlated NBA parlay. Many sportsbooks offer the ability to make NBA bets against the spread and total in the same game. So if you have a great read on a game and expect one team to quit and fall behind, you may decide to make an NBA parlay prediction. At Doc's our experts will offer a free parlay pick in rare cases. It is not common because we need to find value for our customers on both lines before they move. If our parlay prediction is indeed on the same game, we need to confirm there is value regardless of the fact that you can't line shop the odds on a parlay. Both bets in a parlay must be made at the same sportsbook. If there is a free selection on the total over of -14 and under 200 it was offered knowing that those lines can be found at most Las Vegas sportsbooks and online.

What are NBA Playoff Predictions?

Once the regular season is over the NBA tends to resemble the national football league in many ways. Bettors have much more time to make their NBA playoff picks as teams travel to each other's arenas and rest between series. Making successful NBA playoff predictions is as much about when you bet as it is who you bet on. A series might not start for days. That means an NBA spread may move quite a few points especially as the public bets closer to the action. If we see value in a playoff prediction it will rely heavily on getting the line we are quoting in said NBA pick. In the words of the great Tony George, "We are betting numbers, not teams!" That may not be more relevant than when making picks on the NBA playoff games.

2-Unit Play Take New York -4.5 over Sacramento (7:30 p.m. EST, Saturday January 25)
The Kings have been hot, but we think this is a very tough matchup for them. This is their third game in four days, and they looked like they were running out of steam on Thursday vs. the Nuggets. They will need everything in their arsenal to beat the Knicks at MSG, and we don’t see this matchup going well for them. The Knicks have won and covered the last two meetings and six of the last seven.
4-Unit Play Take Milwaukee +3 over LA Clippers (10:30 p.m. EST, Saturday January 25)
Just love the way the Bucks have been playing, and we had this line handicapped at PK so there is some value here. Milwaukee is playing as well as any team in the NBA right now and making up for a slow start. They are a live underdog to win this one tonight. They play well against the Clippers traditionally. They have won eight of the last 10 meetings and covered in three straight. That is a long history of dominance since these teams don’t play each other often.

LA has started to put it all together, winners of 4 of last 5 games including beating Celtics last time out. Golden State hasn’t beat many good teams the last month and with Kuminga out think it’s another ugly loss for GSW. Curry keeps Warriors close but just too much Lebron and AD. Take LA Lakers to win and cover the spread on Saturday.

3-Unit Play. Take #520 Atlanta (-4) over Toronto (7:30 p.m., Saturday, January 25)

Atlanta has dropped three in a row, including a loss to this Raptors team last time out. The Hawks have been one of the best stories in the NBA this season and they play their tails off every night so a bounce back looks to be in the cards this evening. Toronto has won four of five but they have shown little signs of keeping that level of play going this year. Lay the small number in Hotlanta tonight.



2-Unit Play. Take #514 Brooklyn (+9) over Miami (6 p.m., Saturday, January 25)

The Nets have lost five straight and they dont have many things to point to as a positive this season. They do have young legs and a bunch of guys on their roster that are fighting to stay in the NBA so they will give maximum effort regardless of the score. Miami is in flux as well with the Jimmy Butler soap opera continuing into the weekend. This wil be an ugly game so take the large number in Brooklyn.

7-Unit Play. #526. Take Chicago Bulls -4 over Philadelphia 76ers (Saturday @ 8:10pm est)

Nice 7* Winner Yesterday on Vcu on the 2nd half comeback and we have a 7*today and a 7*NBA Today as well and excited about the 7*NFL Tomorrow. Per this game, we like Chicago here for a variety of reasons. Philadelphia just beat this team by 8 points back in December and Philly comes off a monumental and exciting Friday night win over the mighty Cavaliers at home because they had just lost to the Nuggets by 35 points. So, they were motivated and got it done. Chicago now is off a 25 point loss to Golden State and have such similar motivation as they return home and revenge against Philadelphia to boot as well. Remember, you have a Bulls team that only put up 42 points in the 2nd half of their last game in a game where they played very well in the first half before completely going away in the 2nd half. Their stars did not shoot that well but they do run relatively deep with the likes of Lavine, Vucevic, Williams, Giddey, Ball and Horton-Tucker who will get more of an opportunity today especially if Dosonmu doesn't play (White is already injured). Let's back Chicago here as I think they will get up to face Philadelphia who lacks some depth and who needed 54% shooting from 3 point land to win with Maxey and George nearly 30 points each.

#509 Denver (-4.5) over Minnesota *3 EST

This is a bandwagon pick as Denver is 12-3 ATS / SU their last 15 games and as hot as anyone in the NBA and Minny is slipping. I do not care, I smell a blowout. The Nugget's offense is unreal right now and Jokic is on his game and dialed in and Minny will have no answer for him. The T Wolves have Edwards listed as questionable with an illness, and if he fails to play Denver will rail them big time. Even with him in there, I see a 8+ point win for Denver.

One key as well is Denver is playing with revenge losing a close one back in November. The Nuggets are also 10-5 ATS as a road favorite this year which is impressive in this day and age and I do not see them overlooking the T Wolves here.

4-Unit Play: #515 Detroit +2.5-110 over Orlando (Saturday, January 25, 2025, 7:10pm ET)

Take Detroit ATS as my top NBA pick for Saturday night. This pick falls into one of my top NBA systems and I really like Detroit in this spot on the road. Detroit did win their last meeting against Orlando by 9 points and this is an Orlando team that has struggled dropping five straight games including a blowout loss against Portland. Meanwhile Detroit is coming off back-to-back victories as a 7.5 point underdog at Houston and 4 point underdog at Atlanta. I looked for Detroit to be aggressive on the boards and they have shot 36.4% as a team from beyond the arc this season. Play Detroit ATS

6-Unit Play: Take 511 Celtics -7.5 over Mavs (5:40 p.m., Saturday, January 25)
I’m backing the Celtics on Saturday. Boston lost last time out but have lost two in a row just once this season and that happened in December. They’re 6-0 SU & 5-1 ATS off a loss since then (12-1 SU / 10-3 ATS off a loss this season). The C’s were gassed in the loss to the Lakers. Boston was playing its third road game in four nights and it was obvious they didn’t have their legs under them. But the C’s are rested for this one and face a banged-up Dallas squad. Boston has a much better net rating (third in the NBA) than the Mavs and they’re 6th in FG and 3-point percentage allowed. Dallas is in the lower half of the league in 3-point defense and that spells trouble against a 3-point shooting Boston team off a loss. I’m laying the points with the Celtics. Thanks & GL! 7-Unit Play. Take #534 Los Angeles Clippers (-3) over Milwaukee (10:40 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 25)

This is one of my favorite spots to bet a small favorite over a good team. The Bucks are bringing in most of the public money here so we are getting an undervalued favorite that will want to grab a big win before they head out on the road for a four-game road trip. The Clippers will have a day off tomorrow to rest and prepare for travel so they will have all of their attention and focus on this matchup. The Clippers are 16-8 ATS in their 24 games this season following a win and they are an NBA best 11-3 ATS in their 14 games this season as a home favorite. The Bucks have been playing great basketball as of late but if you take a closer look at their schedule you'd see that they only have four wins over teams with current records over .500. I am not saying that the Bucks aren't a good team, but right now, the Clippers at home, are a better side than the Bucks. Lay the points on the Clippers as LA is 9-3 straight up against the Eastern Conference.

4 Unit Play Take #516 Orlando -2.5 over Detroit (7:10pm est):

Orlando comes in off an ugly 22 point home loss in their last game to Portland and the Magic were favored in that contest by 7 points. Orlando is finally starting to get healthy again as two of their best players have recently returned to action and they both should be improving with each game they play. I think we see extra effort here in this one tnoght from a Magic team that's looking to put an end to their 5 game losing streak. On the other side of things Detroit comes in off back to back road wins and they did so as underdogs as well. The Pistons still have two more very difficult games remaining on this extended road trip and I think they could be in a big lookahead spot in this one.

Take Orlando minus the points.

7 Unit Play - Take #531 Washington (+14) Over Phoenix. (9:00p.m, Saturday, January 25th)
Washington comes into this game a brutal 6-37 on the year, 0-10 in their last 10 games, and currently on a 12-game losing streak after dropping to the Clippers on Thursday in a 110-93 final. Washington has had it tough lately; this will be their 5th consecutive road game after dealing with Golden State, Sacramento, Los Angeles Lakers, and the Clippers. It is safe to say Washington has to be settled in now on the road, despite not winning a game. Washington has the Suns tonight and then Dallas on Monday before finally heading back home. This is a great spot play as Phoenix just finished up a 5-game road slide and went 3-2 with wins over Washington, Detroit, and Brooklyn. These are three brutal teams, and Washington kept it a tight 130-123 high-scoring game. Washington is definitely looking at this game with a mental take of, Hey, we just dealt with these guys, and they are beatable, as we just showcased it on the 16th of the month. Phoenix is currently 22-21 on the year, 7-3 in their last 10 games, and coming off a strong 108-84 final. A massive confluence here is the pace of play. Despite how bad Washington is, they are 8th in the NBA when it comes to tempo, while Phoenix is 23rd. Washington is also better on the boards and better on defensive steals. Phoenix is currently 4-12-1 ATS as a home favorite, 4-14-1 ATS when playing non-conference matchups, and 4-16-1 ATS after a win. Washington should come in tonight and keep this game within single digits and cover our huge gap of a 14-point differential.

4 Unit - Take #524 Cleveland Cavaliers (-3.5) over Houston Rockets (-110) (7:30p.m, Sunday, January 19th)

Tonight, in Cleveland, we will be playing against the Houston Rockets. The Cleveland Cavaliers will be our opponents. Despite losing their last two games, the Cavaliers have a record of 36 wins and 8 losses this season. But now I have returned home to play for the Rockets, where they perform at their highest level. This season, they have a record of 21 wins and two losses on their home floor. The Houston Rockets have a record of 14 wins and 6 losses when they play away from home. Houston recently played their final game against the Cavaliers at home and won by a score of 109-108. They must play the Cavs again on their home court, where they have dominated all season. The Cavaliers' offense has become less effective when they are playing away from home. However, keep in mind that this will alter as they work to come back to winning tonight's game. Houston has been a strong team and has performed well throughout the entire season. After losing to the same club on the road, I think the Cavaliers are going to want to get retribution today. The Cavaliers are still one of the greatest offenses in the NBA as they enter this matchup. We think the Cavaliers will beat the Houston Rockets by more than 3.5 points at home, despite just losing to them. Take Cleveland Cavaliers -3.5 over the Houston Rockets tonight.
