Say goodbye to the ovals this week, and hello to the road course circuit. This is the second time NASCAR has been at one this season and we head to Sonoma Raceway for the Toyota/Save Mart 350. this is a 12 turn road course that spans 2.52 miles over many different types of corners and elevation changes. This track has relatively straight and long runs that run into sharp corners very abruptly. That said, one can imagine that brakes and horsepower are going to be extremely important in this race. If you're familiar with this track, you'll know it can be very hard on the cars racing because of the elevation changes. One lap around the track offers 160 feet of changes in elevation. There will also be many opportunities to pass in this race for the drivers that can out brake their opposition and drive in deep. The most likely spot will be on the carrousel turn that goes 180 degrees in the other direction. So, for those drivers that feel more comfortable on the oval tracks, they might have a hard time trying to navigate Sonoma Raceway.

NASCAR hasn't been to California since the Busch Light Clash at the Coliseum back in February. This race is a sign of the road course part of the season and over the next five weeks, you'll see races on two different road circuits that include the new track in Chicago. Since it's been a while since drivers have been on a road course, this could be looked at as an adjustment race to get drivers refamiliarized with this sort of setting. It'll be a great bit of practice for the races to come. Those drivers that had success at COTA back in late March will look to get back in the groove this weekend if they want to have a good day on the track. In addition, those that do well this weekend are set up to do well in the coming road courses in July and August, so pay close attention to those that have success this weekend.

There was a lot of excitement for Team Penske Austin Cindric, who was able to get the win last weekend, but it was at the expense of Ryan Blaney, who also happens to be his teammate. It was his first win since The Daytona 500 in 2022. All three of the drivers that represented Team Penske only took three pit stops in comparison to everyone else who took at least four stops. It ended up paying off in the end for Cindric, however, Blaney literally was one lap short of earning the victory after running out of gas. He was in a heated battle with Christopher Bell who looked like he would overtake Blaney. However, Bells engine soured and barely was able to finish the race.

We have the same leader in the playoff race with Denny Hamlin sitting at the top of the standings with three wins and 534 points. William Byron is still in second with three wins and 488 points. Kyle Larson is holding down the third spot in the Playoff race with 2 wins and 513 points. Christopher Bell is still in the fourth spot with two wins this season and 437 points, while Chase Elliott is holding down the fifth spot with a win and 507 points.
