This weekend NASCAR heads from Nevada to Arizona to finish up this leg of the season on the west coast. In this race, NASCAR visits one of the more unique tracks on the circuit in Phoenix Raceway. The irregular "D" shaped track in Avondale has eight to 11 degrees of banking in the corners while the straightaways are almost flat at three degrees at takeoff into the sweeping corners. This oval is much different than those at Las Vegas, Daytona and Atlanta. The track in Avondale has close confines of the short tracks we all know with high speeds that remind us of intermediate ovals. While it isn't always the case, we've seen in the past that the drivers with the fastest cars generally perform very well here and we expect it to be no different this weekend. If you look at races in the past, the winners of this race have been dominant throughout the entire race as opposed to a late race swing that puts them in front. The proof is in the pudding with seven of the last 10 drivers that have taken the victory have also been the laps leader in the race.

Since this is the first race of the season at Phoenix Raceway, we should look back at the prior season to determine who has a great shot at winning this weekend. The style of racing you'll witness this weekend is going to be a big change from what you've witnessed in the first three weeks of the season. Recently, Chase Elliott had the highest driver rating at this track, but Kyle Busch, Ryan Blaney and Kyle Larson have also performed very well here. It's going to be a dog fight this weekend and I can't wait to see who ends up taking the checkered flag.

If you were to just look at the statistics of this race, you might think that Kyle Larson dominated the Pennzoil 400 the entire time. That is not the case even though Larson led for 181 out of the 267 laps. Larson also won both stages of the race. That said, Tyler Reddick was hot on his tail after the restart with 27 laps left. Reddick started to close the gap and ended up getting it to just 0.143 seconds behind Larson. However, Larson used everything he had in him to hold off Reddick and finished 0.441 seconds ahead of the second-place finisher. It was a fun race, but when all was said and done, the driver that dominated most of the race ended up finishing at the front of the pack.

NASCAR Playoff Standings

With win this weekend, Kyle Larson put himself into the top spot with 118 points while William Byron (103 points) and Daniel Suarez (90 points) are right behind Larson. Both Byron and Suarez have wins on the season. Rounding out the top-5 of the standings are Ryan Blaney with 110 points and Martin Truex Jr. with 104 points.
