NASCAR heads to the Circuit of the Americas road course this weekend for the EchoPark Automotive Grand Prix. Since the 2021 debut at this location, it is the fourth time that NASCAR has been there. This is a 3.426 mile, 20 turn road course track that can be found in Austin, TX. The 68-lap race is divided into three stages that go for 15 laps, 15 laps and 38 laps for the final stage. 20 challenging turns and a really technical layout on this road course will limit the top speeds of the drivers. When inspecting this track, you'll find many similarities to the many Formula One tracks that span across Europe. One fun fact about this course is that it was originally made as a venue to host F1 events specifically. Only the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course seems similar to this track as it is a truly unique track to race on. While NASCAR has spent the last few years making this a regular stop on the schedule, F1 has been a regular visitor to this course while both IndyCar and IMSA have visited periodically.

Terrible weather marked the first season at the Circuit of the Americas road course. The rain impacted qualifying, practice and the race itself. While drivers used rain tires, the lack of traction and visibility was obvious during this race. That said, the last two races at COTA had great weather, which made for a fantastic day of racing. Those are the two races that will give us a better idea of what drivers might have better days. There are four drivers that have a driver rating higher than 100 on this course and they include, in order, Ross Chastain, Tyler Reddick, Chase Elliott and Alex Bowman. It's no surprise those drivers are all towards the top of the betting odds for this weekend.

In a day where tire management was an enormous factor in the race, three veterans of NASCAR finished at the top with Denny Hamlin holding off Martin Truex Jr at the end. There were 54 lead changes in this race, Hamlin lost his lead to Truex Jr in the final laps but was able to regain that position at the right time and beat his teammate by 1.083 seconds. Hamlin earned 44 points for winning this race and he led for a race high, 163 laps.

NASCAR Playoff Standings

While finishing 5th last weekend, Kyle Larson was able to hold on to the top spot of the playoff standings with 185 points and a win. In the second spot sits Denny Hamlin who jumped into this spot with a win this weekend. He has a total of 173 points. After those two drivers, Christopher Bell, William Byron and Daniel Suarez round out the top five with 138 points, 136 points and 133 points respectively. All five of those drivers have one win for the season.

I like Chase Elliott in this race. While he hasn't won on a road course in a couple seasons, you can't dispute his track record on this style of course. He's won seven times in his career on road courses and has finished in the top five a whopping 57% of the time he's raced on this style. I like him to get his first win of the season this weekend.
