As the playoff hunt intensifies, NASCAR heads to Richmond, VA to race the Cook Out 400 at Richmond Raceway. The Olympic break was nice for everyone, but I'm sure speak for all of us when I say it's time to get back to racing. As we approach the final leg of the Chase for the Cup playoffs, we are upon the 23rd race of the season and it's going to be an exciting one. During the era of the Chase, this track used to be where the regular season ended, however, a few seasons ago NASCAR decided shake things up and put this race into the 10 races for the Chase playoff. It was in 2022 that NASCAR moved this race into a spot that has more of an impact on deciding who makes the cut. Instead of determining points in the playoffs, this race has a different sort of impact in which drivers will jockey for position while trying to make the playoff field. As we saw prior to the break for the Olympics, drivers are starting to take more risks than they would normally as we're starting to wind down to the end of the regular season. It will be harder racing, more contact and bigger risks when we had back to Richmond and it's small oval.

Because this is a short track, there will be a group of drivers that have performed well on this kind of track, and we can look back to see who these drivers are. There are some drivers who have performed well over the last 40 races with average finishes inside the top 10 and these include, Denny Hamlin, Kyle Busch, Joey Logano, Christopher Bell and Josh Berry to name a few. Both Hamlin and Busch have driver ratings over 100 here.

Kyle Larson is the man who took the checkered flag at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway on July 21. It's his fourth win of the season and the 27th of his illustrious career in the Cup Series. By making use of some well-timed strategies towards the end, Larson was able to move from outside the top 20 to the front of the pack as other drivers were cautious not to run out of gas. Rounding out the top 5 in this race include Tyler Reddick, Ryan Blaney, Christopher Bell and Bubba Wallace.

As we sit, Kyle Larson is still in the lead with 4 wins and 749 points. In the second spot is Denny Hamlin with 706 points, William Byron with 654 and Christopher Bell having 651. All three of the drivers listed have three wins on the season. Ryan Blaney is in the fifth spot with 676 points and 2 wins. There are still four spots available to a first time winner on the season and this is why the race this weekend is so important.

While Denny Hamlin had a rough go before the break, he has performed historically well on short tracks and all of his wins this season have been on short tracks. He has five wins here and 19 top 5 finishes. He should be in the mix when all is said and done on Sunday.
