We've breached the second round of the Chase for the Cup, and it is getting tight. In crowning the NASCAR Cup Series Champion, NASCAR heads to Charlotte Motor Speedway for the sixth race out of ten in the playoffs. As we end the Round of 12 this weekend, four drivers will be cast to the side to wait until the next season for their shot at a title. This is going to be the seventh annual road course race that has been held at Charlotte Motor Speedway. The North Carolina oval was constructed six seasons ago and is a 2.28-mile oval with twists and turns in what they call a "roval" track. There are 17 turns on this course and you could say the track is similar to Daytona International Speedway's road course that they use for IMSA.

That said, most of these drivers will be out of their comfort zone as they are more used to driving on a true oval. The new wrinkle in the Chase will make for a much more exciting race with lot on the line. The fact that most drivers have raced on the Roval over the past six seasons will help with familiarity, but it is still a big change from what the drivers are used to. When combining the fact that this is a cut race with the unfamiliarity of the newer track, the pressure will be bursting. You'll most likely see that drivers that move on are the ones that don't crack under the pressure or have any bad luck.

YellaWood 500 Recap

Talladega Speedway was the site for the YellaWood 500 and the race where Ricky Stenhouse Jr fended off the field to win a dramatic race. In the win, he was able to edge out Brad Keselowski and William Byron by only 0.006 seconds. Eight of 12 playoff drivers were impacted by a 23-car accident with just five laps left in one way or another. The red flag was produced, and the race was halted for 10 minutes. Stenhouse played spoiler as he hoisted the trophy and not being playoff eligible. In five playoff races, it's the third time that a non-playoff driver won a race.

As we sit, the four drivers on the outside looking in are Joey Logano, Daniel Suarez, Austin Cindric and Chase Briscoe. That makes it even more important for these drivers to perform well this weekend. That said, William Byron has already locked in his spot for the next round and has 3,122 points. Christopher Bell is sitting in the second spot with 3,105 points while Kyle Larson, Denny Hamlin and Alex Bowman round out the top five. Ryan Blaney, Tyler Reddick and chase Elliot are next in line, but could be unseated by one of the drivers under the cut line this weekend. The pressure cooker is on high which should make this race a fun one for the fans.

William Byron has been incredible on road circuits over the course of the last two seasons. He has a pole position 42 laps led and a win in this season alone. In addition, his six starts here, he has led for 80 laps, earned three top 10 finishes and gotten that win. I think he has a great shot at doing it again and dashing some hopes.
