The first of two visits to Atlanta Motor Speedway will take place this Sunday for the Ambetter Health 400. This is an extremely fast intermediate D-shaped oval that stretches 1.54 miles. It's got five degrees of banking on the straightaway and 28 degrees in the turns. The corner banking was increased with the revamping of this track and was previously 24 degrees in the turns. In addition, this track was also repaved in 2021 which hasn't been done since 1997. The five degrees on the straightaway stays the same, but the racing groove was made smaller and went from 55 feet to 40 feet. With the rules package from NASCAR and the new design of this track, you'll notice the racing has a similar feeling to that of Talladega and Daytona. You'll see a lot of side-by-side racing, but this track is like no other on the circuit.

Generally, this race would have taken place in the middle of March, but it has been moved up to race number two this season. In doing so, it is replacing the Auto Club Speedway which is now defunct.

While the intermediate oval is the most common kind of track on the circuit, this track is a bit of an outlier because of the new configuration. All that said, we can still look at the historical data for this track and see that drivers like Ryan Blaney, Martin Truex Jr., Denny Hamlin, and Chase Elliott have all raced well here.

Daytona 500 Recap

What better way to celebrate 40 years of racing for Hendrick Motorsports than to get a win at the Daytona 500. William Byron was the man giving out the early Christmas gifts this year and was able to outlast the late race action to take the win. It wasn't an easy finish with a restart on lap 197 of 200 that had all the drivers in a mad scramble to improve their positioning. There was even one more caution called after Ross Chastain slid through the infield grass after colliding with Austin Cindric, but Byron was able to cross the finish line before that happened.

This was Hendrick Motorsports' ninth with at Daytona which tied Petty Enterprises for the most wins at Daytona.

With the win, William Byron starts the season off with 54 points. Alex Bowman was able to finish in second place earning him 50 points while Christopher Bell finished in the third spot earning him 44 points. Chase Elliott and Bubba Wallace rounded out the top 5 with 42 and 39 points, respectively.

William Byron is a two-time winner on the new configuration of Atlanta Motor Speedway. This alone puts him right up there as having a great shot at getting his third win. Coming off the win in Daytona, AMS shouldn't feel that much different, which puts the Hendrick Motorsports driver in a great position for this weekend. We like the chances of Byron starting the season off with two straight wins.
