On Sunday, NASCAR heads to Richmond, VA for the Toyota Owners 400. This will be the 133rd time that Richmond Raceway has hosted a Cup race in the history of this series. It is located in Henrico County, VA and spans .75 miles in an oval. Turns one through four offer 14 degrees of banking in the turns with two degrees on the backstretch of this asphalt racing surface and eight degrees on the frontstretch. This track runs a lot like a short track, but is similar to an intermediate track. Back when they held the first race here in 1953, Lee Petty was able to secure victory and go down as the first driver to win a Cup race here.

This will be a change in race style as NASCAR is going from the road circuit to the short track. The feel of this track can be compared to Charlotte because of the higher speeds and Bristol because of the contact. You can find the average lap to be somewhere around 120 mph which happens to be a lot faster than most .5 mile tracks, but with the close quarters racing that makes this so much fun. You might also see a lot of cars being shut down early due to the lack of brake preservation and overdriving in the corners. The continual braking on this track tends to wreak havoc on rotors and brake pads. Another thing to keep an eye on is fuel preservation. Unlike a lot of the short tracks on the circuit, the long green flags runs will mean that drivers will have to have a solid strategy to get out of this one unscathed.

Getting his first trophy of the year via three Overtime restarts was Tyler Reddick. Not only was it his first win of the season, it was his first with 23XI Racing. He was able to edge out two-time series champion Kyle Busch by 1.411 seconds. It was a race filled with NASCAR's very best drivers and international champions, but for most of the race it was a battle between William Byron and Reddick who had the two fastest cars. It was a back and forth affair that had both drivers taking the lead back from one another on numerous occasions. However, when all was said and done, Reddick was able to nab the win.

William Byron still sits in the first spot with two wins and 97 points. Behind him comes Kyle Busch with 192 points and Joey Logano with 186 points. With the win, Tyler Reddick boosted himself into the fourth spot with a win and 161 points for the season while Ricky Stenhouse Jr rounds out the top-5 with 159 points. These are the only drivers with wins in the season, which tells us there are a lot of spots up for grabs. So far, it has been a mix of different winners and we expect this trend to continue into this weekend.

Richmond Raceway is a place where Kevin Harvick performs. He has led over 1,200 laps in his career on this track and has four wins to add to that. He has raced at a high level thus far and I see the trend continuing this weekend in Virginia. He hasn't quite hit his groove yet this season, but this could be the track where he does it.
