Up next on the NASCAR schedule comes the Geico 500 on the famous Talladega Superspeedway. The tri-oval in Talladega is the biggest oval on the NASCAR Cup Series circuit. There are an incredible 33 degrees of banking in the turns and the track runs 2.66 miles. The banking and size of this track make it an exhilarating, wide open, four-wide race where the room for error is miniscule and the speed of the race is high. This will be quite a bit different than the run of short tracks in the recent past.

The action that we'll come across this weekend will be something similar to the earlier Daytona 500. In these races, expect to see heavy packs that eventually spread into multiple packs or double lines over the course of some really long green runs. This race gives drivers the ability to move from the back to the front with relative ease, and the NextGen cars allow for some more competition at the front of the race. There were 52 lead changes at the Daytona 500 and that was much higher than the average of the last five seasons, but since the new cars came into play, the average is moving up. We also saw a lot of multi-car crashes at Daytona. Because of the recent uptick in these big crashes, don't be surprised if we see some drivers sitting back and waiting for opportune moments to make a move. Even with the points set up the way they are with the stages, drivers might feel it's a better decision to wait and avoid the wrecks.

NOCO 400 Recap

With the decision to take a two tire pitstop instead of a full change, Kyle Larson's Hendrick Motorsports team took a risk to give him a shot at winning the race. In this case it worked out and Larson ran away from the field with a win by a whopping 4.142 seconds. It was Larson's first win at this track and with 30 laps to go, Larson pulled ahead and never relinquished the lead. That said, he had to fight off Joey Logano who had an excellent race in his own right. Logano started at the back of the pack and ended up making a push for the win. While his effort was valiant, Logano wasn't able to catch up with Larson and finished with an impressive second place.

NASCAR Playoff Standings

Wish Kyle Larson's second win of the year, he launched himself into the top spot with those two wins and 285 points. William Byron is now holding down the second spot with two wins and 208 points. With 302 overall points, Christopher Bell sits in third with his lone win. Following Bell is Tyler Reddick with 265 points and Joey Logano with 258 points. Outside of the top five only Kyle Busch and Ricky Stenhouse Jr. have wins for the season.

I like Joey Logano to pick up his second win of the season in Talladega. He had a second place showing at the Daytona 500 and is one of the favorites to take the checkered flag in this race as well.
