The 22nd race of the season and the approaching excitement of the Chase for the Cup Playoffs is around the corner when NASCAR heads Richmond, VA to the Richmond Speedway. A few seasons ago, the schedule had some changes made to it. This track used to be where the regular season ended and the playoff field was determined, but not anymore. Now it is one of the 10 races in the Chase playoffs. The adjustment was made in 2022 when the governing body wanted to make this part of the races that determine who will race in the playoffs. That said, there will be some real urgency in this race with only a few more spots up for grabs. As the clock ticks away on the chances of drivers making the playoff field, you're going to see some intense racing where strategy and patience is going to be key.

There are five spots left where a win will push a driver into the playoff race. You'll see drivers going all out and as we saw in Pocono last weekend; you're starting to see drivers take some risks to get that elusive win. There will be more contact, harder racing and higher stakes this weekend and the pressure will only compound as we get closer to the end of the regular season. When putting all this intensity on the small oval that is Richmond Raceway, we should all see some thrilling racing.

Some of the drivers that have done well in Richmond in the past include Kevin Harvick, Denny Hamlin, Kyle Busch and Christopher Bell. All four of these drivers average over 100 for their driver rating at this track. However, there are some hot drivers out there right now so who knows what will happen.

It was an extremely tight race when it came down to the final laps in Pocono. With seven laps to go, Denny Hamlin was able to pass Kyle Larson with a bump to win his 50th career Cup trophy. It was also his seventh win at Pocono Raceway in the NASCAR Cup Series which is an all-time best. All that said, the crowd wasn't happy when the race ended under caution. Kyle Larson was also displeased with the way the ending went down as that bump he received from Hamlin caused him to finish in the 20th spot.

NASCAR Playoff Standings

Denny Hamlin boosted himself into fourth place in the standings with his second win of the season and 656 points. William Byron still leads the pack with four wins and 681 points, while Martin Truex Jr. sits in second with three wins and 711 points. Kyle Busch is still in the top five with three wins and 609 points. Kyle Larson rounds out the top five with two wins and 601 points on the season. It’s getting close to the end and with just a few spots left, we should have some real action in these last weeks to come.

Since 2016 Kyle Larson has two wins in Richmond in addition to eight top-10 finishes. It's one of his favorite tracks and there is a reason why he is up there as one of the favorites for the race. For these reasons, I like Larson to win.
