In this week’s race, NASCAR will visit the shortest track of the circuit for the Xfinity 500 at Martinsville Speedway. This will bring the Round of 8 to an end as we head to the foothills of Virginia's southern region. After racing at intermediate ovals and superspeedways for most of this Chase, we do a 180 and go the opposite way for this race. There might be some big surprises in store for these drivers as Martinsville usually delivers some unexpected issues for drivers.

This track has best been described as a "paperclip" with long straightaways that stretch 800 feet running into hairpin turns that bank at 12 degrees. This track will require drivers to have physical stamina, toughness and the ability to concentrate through all sorts of mental and physical hurdles. In addition to worrying about these issues, drivers will also be challenged by the durability of their equipment, which will take a real beating on this track. When drivers when this race, you'll notice they may not have been the best driver of the day, but they were the best at surviving and that seems to be the ingredient for a win. There is a huge demand for top end performance from both the car and the driver, that said, it is fitting to have this race as one of the most important ones in the schedule.

Everyone tune in this weekend because it's a big race with a lot of implications for the future. This should be a good one for race fans.

Dixie Vodka 400 Recap

Kyle Larson has come really close to winning at Homestead-Miami and while he's led a great deal of laps, the win had eluded him. He finally did it last weekend and was able to get the victory at the Dixie Vodka 400. In addition, he did it in dominant form after leading 199 of the 267 laps. He ended up winning by 1.261 seconds over Ross Chastain. AJ Allmendinger came in third place in this race while Austin Dillon and Brad Keselowski rounded out the top 5 for this race.

NASCAR Playoff Standings

Joey Logano still sits at the top of the leaderboard. He currently sits with 4,106 points and is only 5 points ahead of second place driver, Ross Chastain who has 4,101 points. Chase Elliott still sits in third with 4,093 points, while William Byron jumps Denny Hamlin for the 4th position. Denny Hamlin is right below the cut line with 4,082 points and Ryan Blaney in the 6th spot with 4,069.

Since we're not expecting a wild race in Martinsville, we'll probably not see somebody with a lot of points tumble out of the top 4. With that being said, there isn't a lot of data on these short tracks with the NextGen cars, so picking a winning driver gets tough. However, we like Joey Logano even though he doesn't have to win this race. With no concerns on beating specific drivers or have different strategies, Logano can go out there and just go for the win. For that reason, I like him this weekend.
