Indianapolis Motor Speedway Road Course
Indianapolis, IN
NBC
NASCAR is now returning to Indianapolis this weekend for the Verizon 200. This 2.534-mile course has 14 turns and is built into the legendary oval at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. This race is divided into three stages that include the first stage going for 15 laps, the second stage is 20 laps, the final stage is 47 laps, for a grand total of 82. Because of the incorporation of the front straight of the oval and 14 turns less than a normal road course, this road course is a bit faster than race fans might be used to seeing. It's got the vibes of the Circuit of the Americas course without all the changes in elevation. This is a very unique road course when compared to others on the NASCAR circuit with F1 and IndyCar having used it, and started being used in 2020 by NASCAR
There isn't a lot of data to work with on this race since it's just the second time that the top division of NASCAR has raced here since 2014. In addition, the NextGen cars make it a little more difficult to predict what might happen. That said, over the last three road course races Ross Chastain has an average finish of 4th with a win and three top-10 finishes. Chase Elliott is right behind him with an average finish of 4.7 and has three top-10 finishes as well. Those two are favorites in this race and we can see why. Whatever happens, it's always a blast to head to Indy with racing on the mind.

M&M's Fan Appreciation 400 Recap
Chase Elliott was the winner in last weekends "penalty fest". Elliott was on the receiving end of an adjusted finish, and it was 4th win of the season, putting him in great shape for a championship win. Denny Hamlin had initially won the race after starting on the pole for his third win of the season, but after post-race inspection, it was handed over to Elliott. To keep with the theme of penalties, Michael McDowell and his team got an L2 penalty which happened to be very similar to what Brad Keselowski got earlier in the season. It cost him 100 points in the standings and 100 points against the owner. In addition, Keselowski's crew chief, Blake Harris, was fined $100,000 and is going to have to sit out the next four Cup Series races this season.
Overall, it was a strange day, but Chase Elliott is in a great spot to continue his success on the season as we head into the latter parts of the schedule.
NASCAR Playoff Standings
Chase Elliott still sits at the top of the playoff standings with four wins and 787 points. He seems to be locked in right now and is in a great position to win a championship. Sitting behind Elliott with two wins each are Ross Chastain (682 points), Joey Logano (599 points), William Byron (572 points) and Denny Hamlin (443 point). Ryan Blaney and Martin Truex Jr are still holding onto the last two points spots. One win can launch a driver into the playoff picture so neither Blaney nor Truex Jr should be comfortable.

We like Chase Elliott's chances because of his recent success on road courses this year. There isn't a lot of data to work with on the course with the new cars, but there is enough evidence to show that Elliott should be right in the mix.
