Sonoma Raceway is where the Toyota/Save Mart 350 will take place this weekend. The Cup Series has previously run at this 1.99-mile, 11-turn layout and it will be the 33rd time that the NASCAR Cup Series has been here. Ricky Rudd won the inaugural race back in 1989 and Kyle Larson is the defending race winner. Out of the six road courses on the 2022 schedule, this is the second one of the season.

Sonoma Raceway is the first road course since Circuit of the Americas on March 27. In that race, Ross Chastain took the checkered flag, but that said, he still isn't in the top-3 for being a favorite. Sonoma has a long history that we can look at to try to get a better handle on who should do well. In addition, road courses seem to be a little easier to predict because of the unique structures they are built around.

Joey Logano got his second win of the year at World Wide Technology Raceway last Sunday. Kevin Harvick had brake issues on Lap 236 of 240 which led to Kyle Busch and Logano lining up side by side. After an overtime restart, Logano's teammate, Ryan Blaney, gave him a little boost and had Busch and Logano going back and forth. This was until on a white flag lap that Busch washed up the track. It was all Logano needed to capture his second win of the season.

The real story of the race was Ross Chastain having to eat some humble pie after the race for running into multiple drivers. The worst was when Chastain spun Denny Hamlin out after he couldn't pass him. Not sure if it was frustration or just a lapse in judgement, but Hamlin was not happy and waited for him on a couple laps to try get even. After the race, Chastain apologized to the field and said he was expecting some repercussions on the track in the future.

NASCAR Playoff Standings

After this race, Joey Logano launched himself into the second spot with 467 points and two wins. He sits behind points leader, Ross Chastain, who has 490 points on the season along with a pair of wins. Rounding out the top-5 are William Byron with 438 points, Denny Hamlin with 319 points and Chase Elliott with 507 points (1 win). There are now 5 spots up for grabs with a win and these races will become more important as time goes on.

Could this be the race where Martin Truex Jr. gets his first win of the season? He has raced very well on road courses and has finished in the Top-10 in 11 of his last 13. While he is without a win on the season, this might be one of the best chances he gets to get that ever elusive first win under his belt. That said, it is tough to go against Chase Elliott in this one. He is only 26 years old and has already won seven road course races. That ranks him third all-time. Not only that, but if you look at average finish on road courses, Elliott is ranked 1st all-time. We like him to keep up his dominance.

Now we will ride them for a second straight week against another NFC North rival, the Minnesota Vikings. The Vikings are 8-2 on the season, yet are only around a field goal favorite. I still do not trust Sam Donald to win consistently over the course of a 17 game regular season. Minnesota is not as good as their 8-2 record would indicate and playing outdoors in Chicago on Sunday will cause issues for them on both sides of the ball. Chicago has been hit or miss this season, but they will be up to play another divisional rival and we expect them to take this down to the wire as well.
