The Ruoff Mortgage 500 on Sunday is the 52nd race in the series that Phoenix Raceway has hosted. This is a low banked, tri-oval track that stretches 1-mile over asphalt. Turns one and two have 8 degrees of banking while turns three and four are at 11 degrees. The backstretch sits at 3 degrees. Alan Kulwicki was the winner of the inaugural race in the Cup Series back in 1964 when the track first opened.

Martin Truex Jr. is the defending winner here when he won this race in 2021. He'll be looking to repeat his performance as he is one of the favored drivers in this weekend's race. Another driver that will be looking for a win and has had great success in this race is Kevin Harvick. Harvick is a five-time winner and won this race four times between the years of 2014 - 2018.

Pennzoil 400 Recap

In a dramatic overtime battle, Alex Bowman was able to hold off Kyle Larson. In a gamble where Bowman only changed out two tires on his final pit stop, he cashed in with a victory on the final two lap sprint. Bowman and Larson both started up front after the final pit and both took two tires. The big risk was holding off Kyle Busch who took four tires and led for 40 of the previous 45 laps in the race. That said, Busch was unable to even make a pass to challenge for the top spot, so the gamble paid off. This was a much-needed win for Bowman as it was the first time in the season's three races that he finished in the top-20.

Bowman only led 16 of the 274 laps while Larson led for a total of 27 laps. In terms of laps led, Ross Chastain led for 83 laps in this race and won the first stage of the race. Chastain ended up finishing 3rd on the day. Kyle Busch finished 4th on the day while William Byron finished in 5th.

Busch looked like the favorite for much of the race as he was leading towards the end of the race and it's his "home track". His last victory here was in 2009. An impressive fact to note is that Kyle Busch was running his back-up car after wrecking his starting vehicle in practice. To come out and race so well is a testament to him and his team. The home crowd showed appreciation after his hard-fought race.

NASCAR Playoff Standings

After the race in Las Vegas, Kyle Larson is back on top in the playoff race with one victory and two top-10 finishes. He also leads in total points with a total of 113. Austin Cindric dropped back to 2nd after finishing 19th in last weekend's race (103 points). With the win, Alex Bowman moved up the 3rd place with 80 points after getting the win. Martin Truex Jr. finished in 8th place and sits at the top of the points chart for those that haven't gotten a win yet (107 points). Rounding out the top 5 is Joey Logano with 104 points. Logano finished 14th on the day.

You can never count out Kevin Harvick when racing in Las Vegas as he has nine wins here. However, it seems like Kyle Larson is racing like he left off last season and we like him again this weekend.
