For the next to last road course race of the season, NASCAR will head to Watkins Glen International. This has been a season full of road courses the 11- turn Watkins Glen circuit has many long straightaways and is winding at the same time. This race is divided into three stages which go 20 laps, 20 laps and 40 laps for a total of 90 on this 2.5-mile track. One unusual thing about this course is that top speeds get close to 160 mph and that isn't normal for most road courses. This is due to those long straights in three spots that we spoke about. aero handling and horsepower are big factors in this race which also makes it unique to road courses. Keep an eye on the sharp corners in this race because we've seen many come in hot and try some aggressive braking and accelerating to try to maneuver around other drivers. This has led to some drivers going off the course, but the drivers that are able to stay out of the grass and gravel should have a great chance at doing well. Being aggressive is more important on the short tracks than it used to be, but what's even more important is your starting position. That said, most drivers you'll see lifting the trophy at the end of the race generally started in a good position.

Federated Auto Parts 400 Recap

The 65-race winless streak for Kevin Harvick is finally over and not only did he end it two weeks ago, but he decided to start a new streak for winning. Harvick was able to thread his way through traffic to win his second straight with Christopher Bell and Chris Buescher finishing 2nd and 3rd respectively. Harvick ended up finishing 0.441 seconds ahead of 2nd place. This is the fourth time that Harvick has earned the win at the short track, but it was his first since 2013.

Over the course of the race, Harvick led for a total of 55 laps and led on two different occasions when he passed Joey Logano on Lap 334 and then passed Denny Hamlin on Lap 353 to regain the lead once again.

NASCAR Playoff Standings

Kevin Harvick has made enormous strides over the last two weeks and now finds himself in 4th place in the playoff standings with 665 points and two wins. Chase Elliott still leads the pack with four wins and 882 points while Ross Chastain (739 points) and Joey Logano (718 points) sit behind him in 3rd and 4th place in the current standings. There is currently one spot open in the chase for a driver to get a win. Ryan Blaney is barely holding on to that last spot and numerous drivers trying to take it. As we near the end of the season, drivers will be taking bigger chances and they should be if they want to find themselves in the next round.

Both Ryan Blaney and Martin Truex Jr. are on the cusp of grabbing that last playoff spot and with only two races left, they'll need to step it up to get a win. The question is, will these two take more risks to try to win, or fight for stage points and hope someone wins that already has a win under their belt. It wouldn't be shocking to see Truex Jr. win this race as he does very well on these road courses, but I think we're going to see Kyle Larson take the checkered flag.
