Atlanta Motor Speedway is the location of the Folds of Honor Quik Trip 500 this weekend with NASCAR starting their tour of the southeast. Atlanta Motor Speedway is a 1.54-mile intermediate, quad oval track. This track first opened up in 1960. The inaugural race was won by Fireball Roberts.

This week is going to be interesting. After watching 2021 Rookie of the Year, Chase Briscoe, dominate last weekend, we wouldn't be surprised to see him make a run at the top again. Kevin Harvick and Kurt Busch both have a solid history here. Busch just won this race in fall of 2021, while Harvick won the race in the fall of both 2020 and 2019. Over the last 10 races at Atlanta Motor Speedway, Fords have won 5 races, Chevrolet has 4 wins and Toyota has 1.

Ruoff Mortgage 500 Recap

Chase Briscoe got his first Cup win and became the 200th winner the history of this race. However, it was a tight one and three drivers were battling for their first wins in the NASCAR Cup Series. That said, Briscoe wasn't about to give up the lead as he had to fend off the field twice with two late race restarts. The final restart took place with only three laps remaining. Cars were sometimes spanning out seven wide on the restarts so Briscoe certainly earned this victory.

One reason why Briscoe was staying out front for much of the day was his fast pit stops. He led this race for 101 laps and was second in that department behind Ryan Blaney’s 144 laps led. On the final restart Tyler Reddick and Ross Chastain went three wide. All three drivers were extra motivated to get that first Cup Series win, but Briscoe left them and let the two battle it out for runner up.

Chase Briscoe's teammate Kevin Harvick was able to hit a major milestone with his sixth-place finish. He tied both Dale Earnhardt and Richard Petting with 18 consecutive finishes in the top-10 at Phoenix races. It's an impressive feat for a driver that seems to race very well in Phoenix. Another driver that races well in Phoenix is Kurt Busch and he was able to finish seventh. Kyle Larson, who has been on a roll lately had a broken valve with 74 laps remaining in the race. This is the second time this season that Larson has finished below 30th. Good thing for him, he already has a win under his belt.

NASCAR Playoff Standings

Chase Briscoe has surged to the top of the Playoff Standings with his win and is tied with Kyle Larson at 126 points and one win. Austin Cindric, Alex Bowman and Joey Logano (points leader) all round out the top 5. Kyle Busch sits in the sixth spot with 132 points while Chase Elliott is on his tail with 131 points. Aric Almirola is in the eighth spot with 122 points, while Ryan Blaney and Tyler Reddick finish up the top-10.

Chase Briscoe looked great last week and reminded me of how Kyle Larson looked last season when he looked like his car was just faster than every other driver’s vehicle. While Kyle Larson is once again a favorite, we like Joey Logano to bounce back in this one.
