After all the little rule changes, the playing it safe and survival tactics of the All-Star Race, it'll be nice to get back to a normal track with the rules we're all used to. Charlotte Motor Speedway takes us back to an intermediate track that runs fast and requires a lot of strategy to maintain the positions gained. In addition, drivers will try to survive whatever new tire issues that come up that we've seemed to deal with the entire season.

The Coca-Cola 600 is Charlotte Motor Speedway's 124th Cup race in the history of the series. Concord, NC is where this track is located and it's a 1.5-mile oval track with an asphalt surface. There are 5 degrees of banking on the straightaways and there are 24 degrees of banking in the turns. Joe Lee Johnson won the inaugural race held here in 1960 and it's had a rich history ever since. Kyle Larson was the winner in the 2021 version of this race, and we've got some great competition this season, so it could be anyone's race.

NASCAR All-Star Race Recap

Ryan Blaney was the driver to win the NASCAR Cup All-Star Race and the $1 million dollar prize. It was his first win at an All-Star event, and it was a unique one at that.

Blaney had to essentially win the race twice as the caution flag was thrown up just seconds before he finished the race the first time around. After the caution, Blaney would come back and win "again" and beat out Denny Hamlin by 0.266 seconds in the overtime finish.

Blaney and his team thought they had taken the race but didn't realize the yellow light had come on because of an accident involving Ricky Stenhouse Jr. on the backstretch of the race. He crossed the finish line and pulled down the netting in his window before realizing the race wasn't over. At that point, Blaney had to drive one handed while he worked on getting the netting back up in his window as that could have been a penalty. After getting the netting back on, Blaney would go on to take the overtime win.

It was an interesting race and Denny Hamlin felt like the extended laps under caution benefited Blaney so he could get his netting back up. That said, Blaney is your winner of the big $1 million check.

NASCAR Playoff Standings

Nothing has changed from the prior week in terms of playoff positioning as the All-Star race didn't count towards the points totals. There are two drivers that have two wins on the season, and they are William Byron (415 points) and Ross Chastain (407 points). They are in a great position as we reach the halfway point of the season. Following them comes Chase Elliott with 475 points, Kyle Busch with 417 points and Joey Logano with 396 points. These drivers round out the top 5, but there are 6 other drivers with wins on the season including Alex Bowman, Kyle Larson, Chase Brisco, Austin Cindric, Kurt Busch and Denny Hamlin. The cut-off for the playoffs is at the 16th spot where Aric Almirola sits, but if this season keeps trending how it is, we might have 16 drivers with wins.

We're going to try this again and pick Martin Truex Jr. to win this one. He is due for a win and Charlotte would be a great track for this to happen at. He's been fast on 1.5 mile tracks this season and he's won in Charlotte on multiple occasions. He's come really close on some other 1.5 milers, so we like him to get his first win of the season this weekend.
