After a long stretch of road courses and intermediate ovals, NASCAR makes a return to the short track this week in London, NH for the Ambetter 301 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway. This is a flat oval that runs 1.058 miles. NASCAR made their first appearance at the track in 1993 with the inaugural winner being Rusty Wallace. This is a true oval with one degree of banking on both straightaways and seven degrees in all of the turns. This is a flat track in every way and the car's handling will be very important this weekend. To pass or be passed, the car's ability to make turns, hold the turns and exit the corners will be extremely important. This short track will test even the most experienced team this weekend and a lack of patience can lead to a wreck, and it generally leads to pushing the speed too much or over driving.

The old saying, "race the track, not the competition", comes into play for this race and it will be fun to see how things turn out. As we get closer and closer to the first cut before the playoffs, there are only so many spots left up for grabs so drivers will be ready to go.

Quaker State 400 Recap

This was a good race from start to finish and almost had another first-time winner take home the checkered flag with Corey LaJoie coming very close. Understandably, LaJoie was disappointed with the outcome, but said he was proud of the team. With 27 lead changes across 12 drivers and 13 different cautions, it was a fun day on the track. Ross Chastain had a strong day and finished in 2nd when the race ended. He had to fight back after being in an accident involving nine cars right before the halfway point of the race. After working himself back into the race, he made contact with Denny Hamlin, and it took him out of the race. Needless to say, Hamlin wasn't happy.

That said, Chase Elliott put some distance between him and the rest of the field with his 3rd win of the season. He now has a 47-point lead on Ryan Blaney who has yet to get his first win of the season. With the playoffs creeping closer and closer, drivers like Blaney are starting to feel the heat as they might be on the outside looking in when all is said and done.

NASCAR Playoff Standings

Chase Elliott has widened the gap between him and the next driver in the NASCAR Cup Series Playoff race. He now has three wins for the season and sits at 684 points thus far. Ross Chastain sits in the second spot with 634 points and two wins. Other drivers with two wins and are coming in behind Chastain are Joey Logano, William Bryon and Denny Hamlin respectively. There are only three points spots available at this time and they are being held by Ryan Blaney, Martin Truex Jr. and Christopher Bell.

While Ryan Blaney is the favorite this weekend, Chase Elliott is primed to stay atop the rankings and maybe even extend his lead. While his Loudon stats are very impressive, he has done well on short tracks this season. He won the Monster Mile back in the spring and has two top-10 finishes on four short tracks this year. We like him to keep building his lead.
