Atlanta Motor Speedway is the location for the Quaker State 400 this weekend. This is the first time since 2010 that a NASCAR Cup Series race will be held here as Kentucky Speedway got the spot on the calendar. That being said, it was announced in September of 2020 that Atlanta would be getting that spot back. With only 400 miles to be driven, the race this weekend will be a little bit shorter than in previous years. It is a total of 260 laps and the first two stages will be made up by 80 laps each, with the last being 100.

The most recent winner of this race was Kurt Busch back in 2010. It was the second time he won the race. In the history of this race, Cale Yarborough won six times and Chevrolet has the most wins as a manufacturer with 17 wins.

William Byron led the drivers into the green after having the fastest qualifying time. The first caution of the day happened quickly as Daniel Suarez stalled his car out just three laps into the race. It was the first of two cautions, and the first stage would go down as a win for William Byron.

Stage 2 started with Martin Truex Jr. taking the lead. However, he lost the lead in a hurry. After some back and forth between Matt DiBenedetto and Austin Cindric, Kyle Busch was the man that would eventually take the lead. With about 8 laps left in the stage, Denny Hamlin started having issues with his brakes. Cindric had something break on his car and spun out from leading the field and Corey LaJoie spun out with 4 laps to go. This left Tyler Reddick in the top spot and allowed him to grab his first stage win of the season.

The final stage started with Kyle Busch leading the pack, but Matt DiBenedetto was able to wrestle the lead away from Busch. It wouldn't be long until Chase Elliott did what he does on this style of track and took the lead. The last caution of the day came out when Anthony Alfredo cut a tire and spun out into the gravel pit. Aric Almirola and Ryan Blaney had a stroke of luck as they were already on pit road when that caution came out which would lead to them being out front when the race restarted. It wouldn't last long, as Chase Elliott would come storming back to take the lead and eventually win the race. It was his second win of the season, and they have both been on road courses.

NASCAR Cup Standings

There has been a lot of movement in the standings over recent weeks. We're also seeing a lot of drivers outside of the top-16 driving well and setting themselves up for a late push. Denny Hamlin still sits out front of all drivers with 798 points. However, that lead is shrinking, and he is only two points up on Kyle Larson, who sits with 795 points. William Byron sits in third place with 713 points, while Kyle Busch and Joey Logano round out the top 5. Chase Elliott is in the sixth spot.
