The Buschy McBusch race was named by the fans this week and they came up with a doozy. That said, it will be another fun race for the campaign.
Sunday will be the day that NASCAR's Cup Series resumes with the Buschy McBusch Race 400. Kansas Speedway will be the location of this race and drivers will be on the hook for a total of 267 laps. Stage one and two will be 80 laps and the final stage of the day will have the last 107 laps.
Geico 500 Recap
For the tenth race of the series, it was an action packed one. If we could give you any clue as to how the race went, the eventual winner Brad Keselowski only led one lap for the entire race.
Denny Hamlin sat on the pole for the Geico 500 by way of the competition formula that NASCAR uses. However, that didn’t last long as NASCAR noticed that every Toyota, outside of Kyle Busch, made unapproved post inspection adjustments that called for a penalty. This penalty forced them all to start at the back of the line. After the penalty, Joey Logano and Alex Bowman were in the front row. The drama started right away as Kyle Larson’s day ended because of a failed setup.
It didn’t take long for the Toyota’s to work their way back up front. In fact, Bubba Wallace was able to take the lead after starting all the way in last place until a caution flag came out on Lap 25. The pit stops that ensued also created some drama as there were a handful of penalties. Everything seemed to be fine until it started getting toward the end of stage one. This was until Denny Hamlin hit Joey Logano’s left rear quarter panel, spun him around and caused Logano to flip his car. The first stage would end in a caution with DiBenedetto taking the win.
The green flag dropped for stage two and off they went. Everything was going smooth until green flag pit stops started and you could see that cars from the same manufacturer were sticking together. These draft groups stayed together while some groups were penalized. Denny Hamlin was also penalized for entering pit road too fast and went down a lap. Kurt Busch ended up having a fire erupt under his car, causing a caution flag to come out. William Byron was the leader out of the caution, but Bubba Wallace quickly grabbed the lead. Stage two finished under a caution flag as it did in stage one. This time, Bubba Wallace was the man earning playoff points.
In the final stage, Ryan Blaney grabbed the lead during the stage break pits stops while Aric Almirola came up 10 spots by only taking fuel on pit road. It would lead to Almirola getting in front after debris on the grill of Blaney’s car caused him to move back. After many laps of single file racing and green flag pit stops, Christopher Bell took the lead, but gave up it up with concerns of fuel milage.
The race went into overtime and it was Brad Keselowski who would surge to the front with a little help from Michael McDowell. He was able to hold off the previous week’s winner William Byron to take home the win.
2021 Cup Series Standings Update
Brad Keselowski moves into the 6th spot in the standings with the win and has 318 points. Denny Hamlin is still leading the pack with 446 points, followed by Martin Truex Jr. who has 359 points.
