The NASCAR circuit heads to Dover, Delaware this weekend for a doubleheader. Dover International Speedway has been a staple since 1969, hosting at least one NASCAR event per year. Since 1971 they've hosted at least 2 events per year. "The Monster Mile" is a 1 mile concrete oval track that banks 24 degrees on the turns and 9 degrees on the straightaways. Martin Truex Jr., Chase Elliott, Kevin Harvick, Kyle Busch, and Jimmie Johnson have all seen success at Dover in the past few years.

Chase Elliott won his 3rd straight road course when he outlasted Denny Hamlin at Daytona International Speedway. It was the first time the NASCAR series has been run on the road course at Daytona, and Elliott didn't have any problem maneuvering. Martin Truex Jr., Jimmie Johnson, and Chris Buescher rounded out the Top 5. It was Johnson's first road course Top 5 since 2012 at Watkins Glen. Kevin Harvick finished a disappointing 17th after starting 1st. Elliott led the most laps with 34, while Hamlin led for 16 laps and Truex Jr. for 10. This was Elliott's 2nd win this season and 1st win in 3 months, so he's riding high coming into Dover this week. Kaz Grala, a rookie who was subbing in for Austin Dillon (Covid-19), finished an impressive 7th in his Cup debut.

2020 Cup Series Standings Update

Harvick maintains a 118 point lead in the NASCAR Cup Series standings over Hamlin. Even with his disappointing finish at Daytona, Harvick still has finished in the Top 10 on 19 occasions in 23 races this season. He's finished in the Top 5 fifteen times and has won 6 races overall. Hamlin is starting to close the gap though, finishing 2nd again. That was his 13th Top 5 finish this season and he's won 5 times. He's also finished in the Top 10 fifteen times. Harvick has the edge in laps led with 888 to Hamlins 647, so his resume is still superior. Brad Keselowski, Chase Elliott, and Ryan Blaney round out the Top 5 in the standings. Keselowski has led for 628 laps this season while having an average finish of 9.8. He has 15 top ten finishes and 9 finishes in the Top 5. Elliot's win put him in 4th place, and he's only 1 of 5 drivers to have won at least twice this season. He's led the field for 503 laps and has 13 finishes in the Top 10. He also has the highest finishing position of 8.63 at Dover, so he'll be a driver to watch come this weekend. He also won there in 2018, so a back to back streak could be in play. Blaney only has one win on the circuit this season, but his consistency has kept him in the Top 5 of the standings for most of the year. He has 10 finishes in the Top 10 and 8 in the Top 5. At 14-1 he could be a sneaky pick this weekend just due to his ability to finish near the top in most races. Joey Logano, who was in 2nd or 3rd in the standings for a lot of the year, has dropped to 6th after a few disappointing weeks according to his standards.

Who will win this event at Dover? Denny Hamlin is racing awfully well right now so I'm going to take him at 9-2. He finished 2nd at Daytona and will tie Kevin Harvick for the most wins on the circuit this season with 6 if he could pull out a win at Dover.
