The Los Angeles Dodgers will remain on the East Coast for the first half of this week for a quick two-game interleague matchup against the New York Yankees. Tuesday night’s Game 1 at Yankee Stadium is set to get underway at 7:05 p.m. (ET), and its will be broadcast nationally on the MLB Network.
The Dodgers started their current nine-game road trip by losing two of three to Pittsburgh this past weekend. They are now 2-6 in their last eight games and 29-39 overall. Los Angeles has gone 10-19 on the road this season, and the total has gone “over” in six of its last seven games.
New York returns home from a brutal 10-game West Coast swing in which it went 4-6. It avoided a sweep at the hands of Los Angeles’ other team by beating the Angels 6-5 on Sunday as a +127 road underdog. The total went over the seven-run line after staying “under” in seven of its previous nine outings.
Dodgers at Yankees Betting Storylines
It has been a dismal season for the Dodgers to say the least after being projected as odds-on favorites to win the NL West this year. They are dead last in this division and 7.5 games out of the lead. Their pitching has held up fairly well with a team ERA of 3.84, but their high-powered lineup has failed to live up to expectations with an average of just 3.53 runs a game. To make matters worse, both Matt Kemp and Carl Crawford remain on the DL.
Los Angeles will go with Hyun-Jin Ryu as its starter for Tuesday night. The left-hander has posted four straight quality starts and comes into this matchup with an overall record of 6-2. His ERA on the year is 2.85, and he has not allowed more than two runs in nine of 13 previous starts. This will be Ryu’s first career start against the Yankees.
New York’s current rough patch has it three games in back of Boston for the lead in the AL East. It returns home where it has gone 19-13 this season. One of the biggest problems that this team has faced all season long is a grocery list of injuries to a number of its top players. Nonetheless, the Yankees are still ranked fifth in the American League in pitching with a 3.71 staff ERA. The injuries have taken their toll on the team’s offensive output with an average of just 3.91 runs a game. Robinson Cano continues to lead the way with 42 RBI and 16 home runs.
Look for Phil Hughes to get the start for the Yankees in this game. He lasted just 4 1/3 innings his last time out after getting tagged with three earned runs on four hits. The loss dropped the right-hander to 3-5 on the year in 13 starts. He has an ERA of 4.89 and a 1.40 WHIP. This will be his first start against the Dodgers.
Dodgers at Yankees MLB Betting Odds and Trends
BetOnline has opened Los Angeles as a +112 road underdog for this matchup with the Yankees listed as -122 favorites at home. The total line for this interleague clash has been set at 8.5.
The Dodgers are 4-9 in their last 13 interleague games and 1-4 in their last five games on the road. The total has stayed under in seven of their last 11 games against a team from the AL.
The Yankees are 6-2 in their last eight games against the NL West and 7-3 in Game 1 of their last 10 series. The total has stayed under in eight of their last 10 interleague home games.
These two last met in 2010, with New York taking two of three on the road. The total went over in two of the three games.
Dodgers at Yankees Picks and Betting Predictions
Yankee Stadium could be just what the doctor ordered for a New York team that is looking to string together a few wins to keep the Red Sox within striking distance in a very competitive AL East title race. It also helps that it is facing a Los Angeles’ team that has had trouble winning anywhere it plays. While the under still might be the best play in this matchup, stick with the Yankees to add to the Dodgers’ woes with a win on Tuesday night.
