However, I think Oregon's season win total says a lot about how vulnerable they are this year. For a team that's averaged 10.6 wins over the last decade, to face just a 9.5 season win total is a bit of a red flag.

Last year's Sun Devils were one of the biggest surprises in the country, lurching out to an 8-1 start and climbing to No. 7 in the country after they demolished Notre Dame 55-21. But Arizona State, which started last season with just eight returning starters, lost two of their final three regular-season games and barely held on for a bowl win.

But heading into their fifth season in the league it looks like the Utes are on solid footing and ready to be a factor in the South race. This is one of Kyle Whittingham's best teams, and they appear set to build on last year's nine-win campaign.

Cal has been a very good team for my bankroll the past two seasons. I bet against them heavily in 2013 as they bumbled their way to a 1-11 season (2-10 against the spread). But then last year I was on the bandwagon early, hitting several big plays on the improved Golden Bears as they posted five wins and got off to a 7-3 ATS start.

I correctly predicted that Chris Peterson's first year in Seattle would go well - but not well enough to beat their season win total. Washington went 8-5 in the regular season and lost their bowl game. And now in Year 2 expectations are essentially nil for the erstwhile Boise State coach.

UCLA has 18 returning starters from last year's squad. And Hundley's replacement is the top-rated freshman quarterback recruit in the country. The Bruins have the other 10 offensive starters back, a 1,600-yard rusher in Paul Perkins, all five linemen, and their top five receivers. They are set to improve on last year's Top 40 offensive numbers.

Last year the talk around Boise State was about how they'd survive without Chris Peterson. The answer was: just fine. The Broncos went 12-2 last year and won yet another Mountain West title. But this year the questions around this team focus on how they will survive without quarterback Grant Hedrick and running back Jay Ajayi, who combined for 89 percent of the team's yards and 92 percent of their touchdowns.

USC is not back to being a juggernaut. Yet. But they are certainly getting close, and Steve Sarkisian's squad is as loaded as it has been since they were slapped with sanctions. Last year's nine wins was actually a step back from their 10-win campaign in 2013. But this season things could be set up for the Trojans to get back into double-digits and back in national title contention.

I was one of the only analysts in the country that was selling Stanford last year. After for straight years with double-digit wins, they slid back to just eight last season. Granted, they played better than their record suggests; three of their losses were to Top 25 teams by three points or less. But I don't know that we should automatically expect a bounce back from a program that's no longer stocked with Jim Harbaugh's recruits.

I have no idea about the behind-the-scenes machinations that led Gary Andersen away from Wisconsin and to Oregon State. But all I know is that Andersen is faced with a massive rebuilding task in Corvallis. Oregon State has spent a decade as a much-better-than-you-think-they-are program. But the cupboard is bare for a team that is just 24-26 the last four years.

Washington State fans are still waiting for Mike Leach to revolutionize their program and explode onto the Pac-12 scene the way he did with Texas Tech in the Big 12. So far the best he's been able to do is a 6-7 season and a bowl collapse in 2013. Looking at the talent and schedule facing this team this year, I wouldn't expect fireworks. But I do think Leach will pull a few rabbits out of his hat this year, and Washington State could be in the mix for a bowl bid come December.

I was all over Air Force's resurgence last season, easily predicting in this very space that they would sail over their season win total of 4.0. They more than doubled it! The Falcons posted the first 10-win season in the eight-year Troy Calhoun regime and enjoyed one of the program's best seasons ever.

Coach Matt Wells has been a revelation in guiding this team, and with 15 starters back, including a key sixth-year senior, the Aggies could be Boise State's biggest impediment to Mountain West dominance.

The Wolf Pack lost by a touchdown or less to Arizona, Boise State, Colorado State and Air Force - four teams that each won 10 or more games themselves. The Wolf Pack was close, but not close enough, to an epic season.

Last year the two Sun Belt newcomers, Appalachian State and Georgia Southern, stole most of the headlines with their out-of-nowhere big seasons, combining to go 14-2 in league play and with Southern winning the regular-season title. But Lafayette went 7-1 in Sun Belt play and enjoyed the league's tie-in New Orleans Bowl berth for the fourth straight year, winning over Nevada to go 4-0 in the Bayou.

The Mountaineers closed the 2014 season on a tear, winning their last six games while averaging an eye-popping 40.8 points per game. They are hoping that momentum carries over into this fall, and Appalachian State is one of the favorites to win the Sun Belt in just their second season in the league and just their third season in the FBS.

If we use South Alabama's season win total number as an indicator then things should be ugly for the Jaguars this year. Last season they went up against a 6.5 win total and came up short. Now that number is cut nearly in half, and a four-win season would be considered a success for a team that's won six or more in four of the last five years.

The Eagles had an amazing season in 2014, their first in FBS action and their first run through the Sun Belt. They were a perfect 8-0 in league play (Ohio State and Florida State were the only other two teams to run the table in their respective conferences) and came incredibly close to knocking off both North Carolina State and Top 10 Georgia Tech. Southern was one of the biggest mid-major surprises in the country and will have a target on their backs today.

The motto for this year's Texas State team is "Leave No Doubt" after receiving what they felt was a bowl snub last season. They quietly were one of the most profitable teams in the country, going 9-3 against the spread, and were an under-the-radar gem in 2014. But a brutal schedule and a rebuilding defense look like they will keep Dennis Franchione's team from improving its record for a third straight season.

Ball State won 10 games in 2013. But they backslid to just five wins last year. They have almost everyone back from last year's team, though, and I think that this group will play closer to what we saw in 2013. It all comes down to offense for Ball State this year. They are relying on sophomore quarterback Jack Milas. He split time with Ozzie Mann last year when they were trying to replace the school's all-time leading passer in Keith Wenning. Milas really need to improve after he completed just 55 percent of his passes last year.

Last year the Falcons lost star quarterback Matt Johnson in the first game of the season. But they overcame that big hurdle and won eight games while going to the MAC title game. This year Johnson is back. So is last year's leading passer, James Knapke, their top two running backs, and their top four receivers. They should improve on last year's 30 points per game average. I can see this being a Top 40 offense.

The Dan Enos Era is finally over in Central Michigan. He announced in January that he would be stepping down as head coach and kind of screwed over the Chips in the process. He was a terrible coach anyway, though, and CMU will be better off in the long term without him.

Akron has the best defense again this year even though they have only six of their starters back. The Cowboys have had three straight substandard seasons, combining to go 13-23 and serving as a nonfactor in anything beyond playing games to determine the Mountain West basement.

Oh Troy. Troy, Troy, Troy. It wasn't long ago that the Trojans were the toast of the Sun Belt. They won eight or more games six times in a seven-year stretch from 2004 to 2010, playing in five bowl games along the way. But the Trojans have fallen on hard times and have struggled to a 17-31 mark over the past four years and been a non-factor in this league.

The Warhawks have been a menace versus major conference teams over the past three years with wins over Arkansas and Wake Forest (twice) and near-misses against Auburn and Baylor. However, UL-M has seen its record worsen the past two seasons, and coach Todd Berry is starting to feel some pressure heading into his sixth year.

Georgia State showed remarkable improvement last year: they actually won a game! GSU has gone 1-23 the past two seasons and just 2-33 over the last three. They haven't had a winning year since 2010 when Shorter, Lamar and Savannah State were on the schedule. They were relatively competitive last year, losing three Sun Belt games by a field goal apiece, and I think this team will continue to improve this year.

Bob Davie is just 11-26 in his time in Albuquerque. At most programs that would have a coach either on the hot seat or the unemployment line. But the New Mexico faithful are showing a lot of patience and are hoping that this is the year in which Davie's boys break out and make their first bowl game since 2007.

Eastern Michigan has been a laughingstock in college football over the past decade. They are just 26-93 in the last 10 seasons and have gone 2-10 each of the past three seasons. They can't do anything right, it seems. I do not think that things will be much difference this year. The MAC is really good this season. There are a lot of veteran quarterbacks, and there are six teams with a real chance to win the league title in Detroit this December.
