Chris Peterson is one of the top tacticians in college football. And his bid to revitalize this Washington program has to be seen as a success after the Huskies won their second Pac-12 Championship in the last three seasons.
Still, I can't help but feel like Washington has underachieved in the past two seasons. Yes, they went 20-7 combined over the past two seasons. They've gone just 12-15 against the spread in that time and finished each season ranked outside of the Top 10 after starting the season inside it.
The Pac-12 has been down the past two seasons. If ever there was a time that the league was ripe for being dominated, that was it. I think Washington blew its chance.
Washington is undergoing a bit of a transitional season. They drop from 17 returning starters last season to just nine this year. Last year they had eight three-year starters and 13 seniors in the starting 22. This season those numbers drop to just two and eight, respectively.
Veteran quarterback Jake Browning has graduated. Georgia transfer Jacob Eason, who at one time was the No. 1 quarterback recruit in the country, will step in to take Browning's vacated slot.
The offense lost its two best players. The defense has suffered massive attrition. Just two starters return from the No. 5 scoring defense in the country last year. Six of the team's top seven tacklers are gone.
This year's Washington team is not nearly as experienced as last year's. But one big advantage that they will have over last year's squad is a more favorable schedule.
Washington opens with three straight, and four of five, in Seattle. The lone road game is a nonconference tilt at BYU. The Huskies have only four league road games. And two of them come against feeble Oregon State and Colorado teams that should be pushovers.
Washington gets it four most difficult opponents - USC, Oregon, Utah and Washington State - all in Seattle. Washington has won 14 straight home games, and they are a stellar 19-1 at home over the past three seasons.
Peterson is an excellent coach and a solid recruiter. Eason showed flashes of massive potential at Georgia and could be a significant upgrade from Browning. If that's the case, then I definitely think that Washington can get to 10 wins. They aren't nearly as good as last year's team. But with a more favorable slate of games laid out for them, I think that Washington could top last year's nine-win regular season.
