I have nothing but respect for this Vanderbilt football program. Vanderbilt is one of the best academic schools in the southeast. And with an enrollment of just under 7,000, this is one of the smallest schools (No. 122) in the FBS. Derek Mason is doing a hell of job, and the Commodores are coming of their fifth bowl appearance in eight years despite playing in the nation's premier football conference.
I don't think that this season is going to go all that well for the Commodores, though. Mason has to replace four-year starting quarterback Kyle Shurmur on offense and five of his top seven tacklers on defense. This is their least experienced team since Mason's first season in Nashville. And that team went 3-9.
Mason is hoping that Ball State transfer Riley Neal will be able to step in and replace Shurmur. Neal is a vet. But he's never had to consistently face the speed of SEC defenses. Neal will have Vandy's top three receivers and three of his top four rushers to work with.
Shurmur and Mason were able to coax a bowl season out of the Commodores by winning three of their last four games last season. It's not going to happen this season.
Vanderbilt opens the season at home against a Georgia team that is one of the best in the nation. The following week the Commodores have to pick themselves up off the mat and head out to face a tricky Purdue team. After a bye, Vandy hosts their second Top 10 opponent of September, LSU.
Looking at the schedule, home games against Northern Illinois, UNLV and East Tennessee State are the easiest games on the slate. I'm also certain this team will spring an upset somewhere along the way. But there is no way that they are going to be bowl eligible. Facing Georgia and LSU early in the season could also leave this team battered and bruised before they even get into the meat of league play.
The Commodores have won at least five games in three straight years. The last time they hit the five-win mark four years in a row as back in the 1950's. They won't pull it off this year. Play 'under'.
