2019 Season Win Total Picks NCAA Football: 'Over'
Syracuse has been so bad for so long that it is easy for college football fans to forget what a legacy program the Orange have. Prior to last season, it had been over 15 years since Syracuse had been relevant on a national stage. But prior to that, the Orange had been right there with Penn State as the most dominant programs in the entire northeastern portion of the country.
It is good to have Syracuse back. After some embarrassing early years in the ACC, Syracuse has proven that it can, at the very least, be a factor in the Atlantic race. In fact, Syracuse, along with Alabama, is one of only two teams to beat Clemson in the past two years.
Dino Babers has resurrected his program. And now Syracuse is out to prove that last year's 10-3 season wasn't a fluke. Syracuse has 13 returning starters, and 11 senior starters, and is looking to reestablish itself in the top tier of the ACC hierarchy.
The key to this season for the Orange is quarterback Tommy DeVito. Babers force-fed DeVito snaps last year to get him primed for his time as a starter. But DeVito is taking over for Eric Dungey, one of the best quarterbacks in Syracuse history.
DeVito will have a decent running game and four of SU's top five receivers back. The offensive line is a work in progress. But Baber's offensive system has been ringing up points for years, and that side of the ball shouldn't cause the Orange problems.
Defensively, the Orange welcome back eight of their top 10 tacklers. They have five three-year starters and will try to improve on last year's No. 116-ranked pass defense.
Syracuse isn't going to sneak up on anyone this season. No one is going to take them lightly. And I have a feeling that their season win total is going to be decided by the end of September.
The Orange have gimme games against Liberty and Holy Cross. They also have a home game against Western Michigan that they should have little trouble with. But games at Maryland (should win) and hosting Clemson (should lose) will really determine how this team tallies early in the year.
Once the Orange get into league play, things get pretty cut-and-dry. They should win their three late-season home games and, at best, will split their four late-season road games.
This Orange team isn't as good as some people hope it is. But the rest of the ACC is in rough shape. And Syracuse is further ahead than most of the programs they will face. I will take them 'over', but I will be stunned if this team wins more than eight games. Buyer beware.
