2019 Stanford Cardinal College Football Odds and Expert Betting Picks
2018 Record: 9-4
2019 Las Vegas Season Win Total: 6.5
2019 Season Win Total Picks NCAA Football: 'Under'
This season win total is low for a reason.
Stanford has been one of the best and most consistent programs in the entire country over the course of the last decade. They've averaged 10 wins per season during the last 10 years and have played in four Pac-12 Championship Games in the last seven years. David Shaw has won 76 percent of his games in his career, and the Cardinal have covered the spread in 60 percent of their games the past decade.
So when I see Stanford's season win total at 6.5 - just begging for a wager on the 'over' - it sets off red flags.
Shaw's team is one of the least experienced groups in the nation. They lost do-it-all running back Bryce Love, the team's three top receivers, and three of their offensive line starters. The Cardinal also has just five of their top 13 tacklers back. Overall, they have just two seniors in the starting lineup and just one three-year starter.
Junior quarterback K.J. Costello was second team all-league last year. He threw for 29 touchdowns to just 11 interceptions and gives Stanford a great piece to build around.
This young Cardinal team is going to get thrown straight into the fire. They open against one of last year's top Big Ten teams, Northwestern. Then comes back-to-back road games at rival USC and then across the country versus Central Florida. Stanford hosts Pac-12 favorite Oregon the week after that trip to the Sunshine State.
Stanford also hosts Washington, and their season finale is at home against Notre Dame. Games against UCLA, Arizona and Washington State won't be easy as well, even if two of them are at home.
I don't like betting against Shaw and the Cardinal. They have been a model of consistency and have won fewer than nine total games just once in the last nine seasons. But I think that the 'over' is the square, sucker's bet on this one. There are a lot of potential landmines on this schedule. And considering Stanford's youth, I think they will step on a few of them.
I'll would take the 'under' if I had to bet this one. But I don't. So I won't.
