Chris Ash, a former hot assistant coach coming out of Ohio State, is entering his fourth season at Rutgers. It is time to put up or shut up. The Scarlet Knights are a complete pushover in the Big Ten, and they have been one of the worst programs in the country. Ash has gone just 7-29 straight up in three years and enters this fall on an 11-game losing streak.
It may not seem it, but Rutgers was actually a little more competitive than their 1-11 mark suggests. Yes, Kansas and Buffalo wrecked them early in the season. But they can take solace in competitive losses to Northwestern, Wisconsin and Michigan State later in the season. The Scarlet Knights were a respectable 7-5 against the spread last season and 15-9 ATS the past two years.
With Rutgers it is all about morale victories. Maybe eventually they can score some actual victories.
Quarterback Artur Sitkowski came into last season as a highly-touted recruit (No. 11 at his position) and the alleged savior of this program. Instead, he turned out to be one of the worst quarterbacks I've ever seen. He completed all of 49 percent of his passes with just four touchdowns to a whopping 18 interceptions. Just awful.
Because of Sitkowski's "growing pains", Rutgers averaged just 13.5 points per game (No. 129). They were No. 127 in total offense, and unless he gets a whole lot better really quickly this attack is going to be punchless again.
Rutgers does have its top two rushers, four of its top five receivers and three offensively linemen back from last year's worthless group.
The Scarlet Knights defense has only two of its top seven tacklers back, and they could see a drop off on that side of the ball unless they get a lot more help from the offense.
Rutgers should be able to handle games at home against Massachusetts and Liberty. That would double their win total from last season! They should also at least be competitive in home games against Boston College, Maryland and Minnesota, as well as on the road against Indiana and Illinois.
So that means the Scarlet Knights would need to win just one of those five league games in order to take a 'push' on this number. And if they win two games, they will get 'over'. Sitkowski can't be that bad again this year. If he is, he won't be the starting quarterback for long. And Ash can't keep losing. If he does, he won't be the head coach for long.
I will take Rutgers 'over' and I think they can find four wins.
