2019 Season Win Total Picks NCAA Football: 'Under'
Jeff Brohm has justified all the hype he incurred when he took the head job at Purdue. Brohm has guided the Boilermakers to back-to-back bowl games, and this has been a team that no one wants to face late the season. Their upset win over Ohio State last October likely kept the Buckeyes out of the College Football Playoff.
Brohm is legit. He is 15-4 in November and 10-1 at home in November. He gets better as the season goes on. Give him another few years and he will turn this into a consistent long-term winner. But Brohm faces his biggest test yet this fall.
Purdue has only four starters back on offense, and this is his least experienced team yet. In fact, this year the Boilermakers are one of the most inexperienced teams in the country. They do have nine starters back on defense. But that stop unit was No. 113 in total defense and No. 128 against the pass last year.
Wide receiver Rondale Moore, who had 114 catches and 12 touchdowns last year, is one of the best wideouts in college football. He's a start. But Purdue lost their quarterback, top two rushers, five of their top eight receivers, and three starting offensive linemen. Brohm is more of a system guy, and Purdue will continue to put up numbers. But that's a lot of attrition.
Purdue opens the season on the road at Nevada. After that they have three straight home games - Vanderbilt, TCU and Minnesota - that will really set the tone for their season. If they are anything better than 2-3 heading into a home date with Maryland on Oct. 12, that would be a victory.
I think that this number is way, way off, though. Where are eight wins going to come from for this group? They may not win a conference road game (at Penn State, at Iowa, at Northwestern and at Wisconsin). That would mean that they would have to sweep the rest of their games to get 'over'.
No way. I think that Purdue's season finale against Indiana is going to determine which one of these teams goes to a bowl and which stays home, just like it did last year. Purdue has won each of those win-and-in games the past two seasons. I don't see it happening a third year in a row.
This is an easy call for me. Take the 'under'.
