Oklahoma State is kind of the prototypical Big 12 team. They can score 50 points or allow 50 points on any given Saturday and are capable of beating or losing to any team in the country in any given week. They are every stereotype that every SEC and ACC fan uses to rag on this high-scoring league, wrapped in one erratic program.
Mike Gundy's squad is coming off an ugly 7-6 2018. However, in the last decade the Cowboys have won fewer than 10 games three times (2009, 2012 and 2014). Each time they rebounded with double-digit wins. Gundy knows what he's doing.
The big question for this team is at quarterback. Hawaii grad transfer Dru Brown and redshirt freshman Spencer Sanders. Whoever gets the job will have a load of experienced playmakers to work with on offense, including dynamic receiving duo Tylan Wallace and Dillon Stoner.
Oklahoma State's defense was one of the worst of Gundy's 15 years in Stillwater. And that's really saying something. They entire secondary returns, but they will be rebuilding the front seven from scratch.
The issue with the OSU defense is turnovers. This team, maybe more than any in the nation, is completely over reliant on creating turnovers. But turnovers are fickle. In years when the Cowboys excel, they are a factor in the Big 12. In years when they don't, they are mediocre. Last year they were -9 in turnover differential, and that's even close to enough.
Last year the Cowboys were inexperienced, and it was clearly a retooling season. They showed some potential in a blowout win over Boise State. But a bunch of close losses, on the road, late in the season, really sunk their season. The hope is that the experienced earned from those games will carry over into this year.
Oklahoma State opens the season with three of their first four games on the road. Despite that, they have a shot at going 3-0 if they can win at Oregon State and at Tulsa, two games they will be significant favorites in.
Even if we pencil in games at Texas and against rival Oklahoma as losses, there aren't many games that I wouldn't reasonably expect the Cowboys to win. Assuming they get the quarterback situation settled - and Gundy usually does - I think the Cowboys will have another quintessential bounce back season, and I think they will definitely go 'over' this total.
