2019 Season Win Total Picks NCAA Football: 'Over'
This year is all about mental hurdles for the Sooners.
Can they win their third straight Big 12 championship?
Can Oklahoma get over the hump and win a bowl game after losing four of their last five?
Can the Sooners finally beat an SEC team in the College Football Playoff after losing to Georgia and Alabama the last two years?
Can Lincoln Riley, now in his third year at the helm and working with more of his own players after taking over Bob Stoops recruits, put his stamp on this program?
Can Jalen Hurts shake off his unceremonious ouster from Alabama and put together an "I told you so" championship run for the Sooners, perhaps becoming the third straight Oklahoma Heisman Trophy winner in the process?
Subplots abound for this elite program. And no matter how things shake out, they have more than enough talent on the roster to be a Top 10 staple and a CFP contender.
Hurts was 26-2 as a starter at Alabama, but was dumped for Tua Tagovailoa. He is not nearly as polished of a passer as Baker Mayfield or Kyler Murray. But Hurts is exceptionally athletic and will be able to do a lot of damage in the open field. He is motivated and should be able to keep this offensive juggernaut (570 yards and 48.4 points per game last year) rolling.
Defensively, the Sooners have plenty of work to do. They were No. 114 in total defense and No. 130 in pass defense. They allowed 33.3 points per game. Oklahoma does have eight of its nine top tacklers back and 18 of their top 21 defensive players. They also brought in new defensive coordinator Alex Grinch and are hoping he can mold this group into a unit capable of winning a game (or two) on its own.
I think that you have to play the 'over' with this group. They really just don't have that many losable games. Chip Kelly's UCLA team may be able to hang around for a bit. And Kansas State and Baylor won't be total pushovers. But the two most difficult games are against Texas and at Oklahoma State in Stillwater. And I just think that the Sooners are on a different level, talent-wise, an are simply better than both of those teams.
Oklahoma will lose a game. They've lost a conference game three of the last four years. But I don't think they will lose twice. I'll play them 'over'.
