Ryan Day, c'mon down.
Day is taking over a powerhouse Ohio State program that has lost just 19 times in the past decade. He takes over for retired Urban Meyer, the second Hall of Fame coach to be ousted from Ohio State under a swirl of controversy in the last 10 years. The goal for the Buckeyes is nothing short of a National Championship, with their last coming in 2014. And despite the apparent bias against Big Ten teams, the Buckeyes are perennial contenders for the College Football Playoff.
Last year, one blowout loss at Purdue was enough to keep Ohio State out of the CFP. The Buckeyes did manage to win the Big Ten title and the Rose Bowl, though, finishing in the Top 5 yet again. They do lose quarterback Dwayne Haskins. But there is no shortage of talent on this squad, and they should be a national factor yet again.
Haskins was the trigger for the nation's No. 2 passing offense and No. 2 total offense. But Ohio State may have actually upgraded the position, with Georgia transfer Justin Fields taking over and his unique skillset setting him up to be one of the most productive player in the country.
While Fields gets his feet wet, the Buckeyes will lean on two-time second team all-Big Ten running back J.K. Dobbins.
Ohio State has nine starters back from a defense that was a bit erratic last season. They have six senior starters and a trio of three-year starters, including middle linebacker Tuf Borland. Ohio State has its top five tacklers and 17 of its top 19 back on that side of the ball.
The Buckeyes have beaten their season win total four times in the last five years. If they do it this season, it will certainly be because they earned it. Ohio State has tough road games at Nebraska, at Northwestern (on a Friday night) and at Michigan to close the season. They also have to tangle with Michigan State, Wisconsin and Penn State, so the Buckeyes will take on all comers in the Big Ten this year.
That's a tough slate of games. But Ohio State has absolutely dominated the other power programs in the league. They are 14-1 in their last 15 games against Michigan, 12-2 in their last 14 games against Michigan State, 9-1 in their last 10 against Wisconsin, and 6-1 in their last seven versus Penn State.
Whether or not Day is the right guy to continue the Ohio State dynasty will play itself out. But there's no reason to think the Buckeyes will take a step back this year. They have 13 returning starters, which is more than they had last year, they have 11 senior starters (more than double last year's total), and they have a potential star in Fields. I think they will lose once this year. But not twice. I'll take the 'over'.
