I understand all the hate thrown Jim Harbaugh's way. I really do. He's not all that likeable of a guy. But that said, I am still rooting for Michigan to finally break through under their ballyhooed head coach. And this could be the year.
Michigan doesn't exactly come into this season with a load of momentum. They won 10 in a row at one point last season. But they had a horrible end to the season, getting bombed 62-39 by Ohio State and then getting wrecked 41-15 by Florida in the Peach Bowl.
It starts with defense in Ann Arbor. Michigan was No. 2 in total defense, No. 2 against the pass, and ranked in the Top 25 in scoring defense and rushing defense. They have only five starters back, and they lost some top-end talent. But the Wolverines are stacked on this side of the ball.
The key to last season was Ole Miss transfer quarterback Shea Patterson. He was very good. Now he needs to be great if Michigan is going to take the next step. Michigan has four returning starters along the offensive line, which is one of the best in the country. They also have four of their top five receivers back and a solid stable of runners.
I think that criticism of Harbaugh's time in Ann Arbor is a little specious. No, he hasn't been able to break through against Ohio State. But of Michigan's 14 losses the last four seasons, 10 of them have come against Top 10 opponents and five of those have come on the road. Six of those 14 losses have been by a touchdown or less. Throw in some tight losses in tough spots - at Utah, at Iowa, versus rival Michigan State - and you can see where this team has actually been much better than its results suggest.
Michigan is 1-18 in its last 19 road games against Top 25 opponents. And they are 1-14 against rival Ohio State. Those numbers are beyond ugly.
The Wolverines don't have an easy schedule. But the fact is that they have their three toughest games in The Big House. They take on Notre Dame, Michigan State and Ohio State in Ann Arbor, all late in the season.
The biggest road challenges come at Wisconsin - although the Wolverines have a bye week prior to that one - and at Penn State (the week before they play Notre Dame).
Michigan is not going to go undefeated this year. They will lose at least one game. But I don't see them losing more than two. I definitely like the 'over' here, and I think that Michigan is more than capable of winning the Big Ten and playing its way into the College Football Playoff.
