2019 Season Win Total Picks NCAA Football: 'Over'
Miami has been one of the most overrated and overhyped programs in the country for the better part of the last decade. And despite having one of the strangest offseasons in college football this year, they are still one of the favorites in the ACC entering the season.
Mark Richt up and quit after just three seasons on the job. Richt's defensive coordinator, Manny Diaz, had taken the job at Temple. Then Diaz left that job and returned to Miami to take over Richt's slot.
Diaz inherited a talented, but raw, roster. And he's already made his first controversial decision, announcing redshirt freshman Jarren Williams as the starting quarterback. He won the job over last year's starter, N'Kosi Perry, and highly-touted transfer Tate Martell. Anything they get from that spot should be better than last year's No. 113-ranked passing attack.
Miami has six returning starters on both sides of the ball. However, they have a total of only six senior starters and this is a young squad.
The Hurricanes will look for the defense to carry them again this year. Last season Miami boasted the No. 1 pass defense in the country. They were No. 4 in total defense and No. 18 in scoring defense.
The D starts and ends with a stacked linebacking corps. Seniors Shaquille Quarterman and Michael Pinkney are both four-year starters, and senior Zach McCloud has 22 more career starts under his belt. They will hold down the fort while the youngsters along the line and in the secondary get acclimated.
Miami leaves the state of Florida only three times all season, and just once before Oct. 20. They avoid Clemson, and this team should be a major player in the shockingly weak ACC Coastal Division.
Home games against Virginia Tech and Virginia will not be easy. And neutral/road games against rivals Florida and Florida State will be tough. But beyond those four games, I don't know that Miami will be less than a six-point favorite against any of their other opponents.
That means that in order for Miami to beat this line, they just need to avoid an upset at the hands of a team like Pitt or Duke and then win one home game against either Virginia Tech or Virginia.
I hate to be on the Miami bandwagon. Especially because it is so undeservedly full each season. Yet it is all about the schedule. And Miami's is tailor made. I do think that they will get to nine wins and the ACC Championship Game. So I will play this one 'over'.
