2019 Season Win Total Picks NCAA Football: 'Under'
It was a bizarre season for Maryland last year. They had to endure the tragic death of lineman Jordan McNair and then the ensuing controversy surrounding former coach D.J. Durkin. Maryland opened the year with a weird upset win over Texas and, at 5-3 in October, looked poised for a surprise bowl bid to cap an emotional campaign.
Unfortunately, the bottom dropped out. Maryland lost its last four games, including heartbreaking losses at Indiana (by 2) and at home against Ohio State (by one in overtime). They missed out on the postseason and now enter 2019 in an apparent rebuilding mode.
For some unknown reason, the Terps hired Mike Locksley. Locksley was actually an interim coach here in 2015 before spending the last three seasons at Alabama. But prior to that, Locksley was a total loser out at New Mexico, going 3-31 straight up in three ugly seasons.
Locksley is known as a great recruiter. But that's not going to help him in the short term with the Terps.
Maryland welcomes in Virginia Tech transfer Josh Jackson to take over at quarterback. They also have most of their offensive linemen and a stable of running backs, led by Anthony McFarland. Locksley will shift them from a solely run-based offense to a more balanced attack.
Defensively, the Terps are well below average. They were No. 79 in scoring defense and No. 85 against the rush. This year they have only four starters back on that side of the ball. And while the secondary has a load of experience, the front seven is undersized and a bit green.
Locksley is the wrong guy on the wrong team that is in the wrong division at the wrong time. They are completely overmatched in the Big Ten East. And nonconference games against Syracuse and at Temple early in the year aren't exactly pushovers.
If the Terps can take out Syracuse or Temple, they should be 2-1 and coming out of a bye week when Big Ten play begins. That's the best-case scenario. And if they win more than two games in league play, I'll be absolutely stunned. I think they can beat either Purdue or Indiana. And everyone can beat Rutgers. I don't think the Terps will be competitive against the top teams in the league.
This is an easy 'under' call for me.
