I will admit that I may have underestimated Ed Orgeron.
The marble-mouthed, Bayou-bred head coach of the LSU Tigers exceeded expectations last year. LSU opened the year on the fringe of the Top 25 and closed out the year in the Top 10, winning 10 games and the Fiesta Bowl in the process.
Now, with eight starters back on each side of the ball, we will see if Orgeron is good enough to take this program back to the nation's top tier and reestablish the Tigers as a legit threat to Alabama's SEC dominance.
Quarterback Joe Burrow was a solid find last year. He was efficient enough but needs to find another gear this year to make up for the loss of leading rusher Nick Brossette. The LSU offensive line, always a strength, has four starters back and should pave the way for another Top 25 rushing attack.
Burrow will also be throwing to his top five receivers, who are all back in the fold. This team is stacked at the skill positions.
Defensively, the Tigers lost their two best players in linebacker Devin White and corner Greedy Williams. They still have a load of athletes to fill in, though, and five of the top six tacklers and the top four sack men are all back and ready for action.
Last year LSU won four games against teams ranked in the Top 10. (Alabama doesn't do that. Ever. Alabama would probably crumble if they had to play four games against Top 10 opponents, especially if they didn't have weeks to prepare for all of the games.) This year they likely won't have to beat that many top teams. But that doesn't mean they have an easy schedule.
LSU's two toughest games are both on the road. They have to square off with Texas in Austin in Week 2 and their SEC-defining game against the Crimson Tide is in Tuscaloosa on Nov. 9.
That is really all LSU has to deal with, though. They get Florida, Auburn and Texas A&M all at home. And the rest of the opponents on the schedule are just fodder.
I think LSU has a great chance of going into Austin and beating the Longhorns. Even if they don't, they don't have to really reach for any wins to stay ahead of this number. I like LSU to get back to 10 wins and to at least test Alabama. Take the Tigers to go 'over'.
