If anything positive can come out of last year's Louisville disaster, it could be that maybe now no one will ever hire human dumpster fire Bobby Petrino ever again.
Petrino drove this team completely off the rails in his second stint in the Bluegrass State. In 2016 and 2017 the Cardinals spent time in the Top 20. But after losing Lamar Jackson, the team went right over a cliff, and Petrino couldn't do anything to help them out.
It wasn't just that Louisville lost last year. It was how they lost. They were routinely embarrassed last season and finished the year by being outscored by more than 24 points per game. They lost their last four games by 61, 31, 42 and 46 points and didn't stay within two touchdowns over anyone during the last two months of the season.
Scott Satterfield, formerly of Appalachian State, will come in and try to steer the Cardinals back on course. Satterfield has a 47-16 straight up record, including a 3-0 mark in bowl games, and will bring a little toughness and discipline back to Louisville.
Satterfield steps into a promising situation. The Cardinals have 16 starters back, including 10 senior starters. This is one of the most experienced teams in the country. And they are catching the rest of the ACC in a time of massive overhaul.
A key for this season will be the maturation of junior quarterback Puma Pass. Frankly, he was awful last year after being touted as the next Jackson. Pass completed just 54 percent of his throws with eight touchdowns to 12 interceptions.
Louisville has a brutal schedule, starting with the season opener at home against Notre Dame. They also have road games at Florida State and Miami and a home date with Clemson. Games against Virginia and Syracuse, even at home, won't be pushovers either.
That said, Louisville should pick up two early wins over Eastern Kentucky and Western Kentucky. I also think they will beat Boston College at home on Oct. 5 after a bye week. That means that they just need to pull one upset to get over this win total. I think they will do it, beating someone that they shouldn't in November.
There are a lot of basic indicators suggesting a quick turnaround for Louisville. Their advance stats suggest a bounce-back season on offense and defense. They were -12 in turnover differential and should get a jolt from the new coaching staff. I'll take them to play well 'over' this total.
