Indiana has made more bowl games (two) in the past four years than it had in the previous 20 years combined (one). However, they have missed bowl games each of the last two years by just one game.
Tom Allen has kept Indiana completive and been able to build on the foundation that Kevin Wilson built in Bloomington. They have been extremely competitive in league play after decades of insignificance. Going back to 2015, about half of Indiana's last 23 losses (11 of 23) have been by seven points or less. That includes three tight losses last season.
The Hoosiers have seven starters back on both sides of the ball. Offensively, they should be improved after finishing No. 36 in the country in passing but just No. 88 in scoring. They also brought in a new offensive coordinator from Fresno State, Kalen DeBoer, to work with quarterback Peyton Ramsey.
Defensively, they finished near the bottom of the Big Ten in nearly every major category. Considering they are in one of the best and toughest divisions in college football, they have to get better on this side of the ball if they want to make any headway in the win column.
Indiana started 3-0 last season, including a win over Virginia. They have a similar schedule this year and should be able to make hay early in the season. In fact, five of their first six games are either at home or in nearby Indianapolis. They do have to take on Ohio State (home) and Michigan State (road) early in the year. But they should be 4-2 going into back-to-back road games at Maryland and Nebraska.
Indiana better win games early, because the schedule stiffens in October and November. And if they can't pull a home upset against Northwestern or Michigan, there is not really a path to seven wins for this club.
With one of his most experienced teams yet, we'll see if Allen can finally get over the hump and back into the postseason. I think that they have a chance to get that sixth win, and it should come down to their season finale at Purdue.
However, I'll be stunned if they get to eight wins. They'll be competitive throughout the season. But they have to tangle with the four best teams in the league as well as a road game at resurgent Nebraska. Even if they won two of those five games, they will still have to avoid any upsets along the way. It's not going to happen. Play 'under'.
