2019 Season Win Total Picks NCAA Football: 'Under'
There are a lot of hurdles a team must overcome to win a National Championship. They have to handle their nonconference portion of the schedule. They have to take care of their road slate in league play. They have to win their rivalry game. Then they have to take care of business in the conference title game.
All of that just gets a team into the College Football Playoff. Once a team gets there, they have to beat two of the best teams in the country.
Georgia can handle almost all of those hurdles. The one they have left to jump over? The mental hurdle they have about Alabama.
The Bulldogs had Alabama on the ropes in the National Championship Game two years ago, holding a 20-10 lead midway through the fourth quarter in a game they would eventually lose in overtime. Then last year they had the Crimson Tide on the ropes in the SEC Championship Game, with a date in the CFP on the line. The Bulldogs choked away a 28-14 lead in late in that game as well.
Kirby Smart has built Georgia into a legit juggernaut. Now we will see if his team is set to take the next step.
Georgia would have to go undefeated to beat this season win total. That's some Alabama stuff. And they have enough Alabama-level talent, led by junior quarterback Jake Fromm and an overwhelming offensive line, to get the job done.
If the Bulldogs go undefeated, it will be because they earn it. They host Notre Dame, a CFP participant from last year, in Athens on Sept. 21. That is one of five home games (in seven) to open the year for UGA.
Things definitely heat up for the Bulldogs in November. First, they have to take on rival Florida (a 10-game winner in 2018) in Jacksonville. Then the Bulldogs host feisty Missouri the next week, while they may be looking ahead to a brutal road game at rival Auburn. After that stint, they come home to tussle with a talented Texas A&M squad.
This Georgia team is a legit national title contender. That said, I think that they have a late-season schedule that could have a couple of losses hiding in it. Will Georgia lose twice in the regular season? Probably not. But injuries, bad luck, and any other manner of college football craziness could sneak up and bite them. And I think the odds are more likely that something bizarre happens and this team loses two games than the odds of them going undefeated.
I'm not in a rush to bet it, but I would take Georgia 'under'.
