Dan Mullen is one of the best coaches in the SEC and has made an instant impact in his first season in Gainesville. Mullen was able to steer the Gators to 10 wins, including a dominating bowl performance against Michigan, and Florida finished last season in the Top 10 after starting the season outside of the Top 25.
Mullen will try to build on last year's success. But he still doesn't have the elite talent in Gainesville that we're used to seeing on the Gators sideline. They drop from 19 to 13 returning starters this year. But they do have more senior starters, more three-year starters, and solid depth due to two years of injury-riddled rosters.
The Gators have 11 of their top 14 tacklers back from a defense that finished in the Top 30 in points allowed, passing defense and total defense. The Gators were also No. 7 in the country in turnover differential (+12), and they have clear-cut senior leaders in Jabari Zuniga and David Reese, both four-year starters.
Offensively, Florida is stacked at the speed positions. They have four of their top five rushers and all seven of their top receivers back in the fold. The key will be whether or not they can get more out of Feleipe Franks. He had 24 touchdowns to just six interceptions last season despite completing just 58 percent of his passes.
Florida has one of the most unique schedule in the SEC. Five of their first six games are in the Sunshine State. That includes an extra early opener against Miami in Orlando on Aug. 24. That early start allows them three bye weeks.
The key to Florida's season will be how it performed on the road. They should win at Kentucky. However, they have a stretch of three straight away games - at LSU, at South Carolina and then against Georgia in Jacksonville - that could define their season.
It is a tough call, but I am going to take Florida to play 'under' this year. This is team has talent. And Mullen is exceptional. But two rivalry games against talented Miami and Florida State teams are tough. So are games at LSU and versus Georgia. They could take three losses from those four games alone. The Gators also have to tangle with Auburn and road games at South Carolina and at Missouri won't be pushovers.
I think that Florida will take a step back this season. And I think that it is more likely that they trip up somewhere and win only eight games than it is that they will be in the national picture all season and win 10. This really is a brutal schedule. I'll play 'under'.
